You should have put the plate on retention before you sold the car. The car would have then been granted an appropriate age related plate
I am not sure if you can just buy a number plate from an individual, The plate will have to be put on retention by the current owner, it can then be transferred. Iit might be cheaper to buy the car back, put the plate on retention and sell the car back

You can buy a plate from another individual as that is what I have just done , but the process is made a little messy by the DVLA

You can't actually change the grantee of the plate until it is put on a vehicle.

The grantee (ie the plate owner) would place the plate on retention. He can then add a nominee to the paperwork and this costs another £25. This would be the buyer of the plate. The paperwork is returned from the DVLA to the grantee (as their name is still on the paperwork and legally the plate is still theirs). They then send the buyer (the nominee) the retention certificate and this allows the nominee to put the plate on their vehicle. If they put it on retention in the future the paperwork will then be in their name. The problem arises if you don't put the plate onto a vehicle straight away as the grantee still owns it and their is nothing stopping a dishonest seller selling the plate again without you even knowing!

I was worried when I purchased my plate as it wasn't going to be used for 3 months until the car came off demo. It then got more complicated because I swapped to a contract hire deal meaning I never get a V5 as the car is registered to BMW contract hire, so the I had to ask the grantee to return the paperwork on my behalf and request a nominee change (again!) to BMW contract hire.

My issue now, is that legally BMW contract hire own my plate but my dealer assures me that this happens all the time, and there will be no problems in 3 years time - here's hoping eh!

If I then decide to buy a vehicle in 3 years time, I will have to request BMW contract hire to add myself or a future buyer of the plate as a nominee.

All unnecessarily complicated IMO - typical government red-tape

That is exactly how it works 'red/white' and your final quote is spot on.

They just create work for themselves and arent flexible in the slightest. At the minute I want to put my plate onto a new vehicle and my wifes plate onto my car. DVLA can't cope with this and I've got to put both onto retention (at a price of £105 each instead of a transfer at £80) then transfer them onto each vehicle once the paperwork is sorted. This just means them having to duplicate V5's & tax discs (as the new ones will need to be replaced again) and also charge an extra £50.

Don't understand why you cant just change the 'owner' of the plate in a similar way to buying a car, so you can then sell it to who you want and use it when you want?

Then just pay a fee to 'assign' it to a vehicle irrespective of who owns it. The original plate could be put on retention until it is requested to go back onto the original vehicle again.

Could be quite easy if they put their minds to it

I think the extra £25 each time someone has to go through this ordeal is enough reason for them to not change it.

Hey, I even bought my Daughter a plate last year (when she was 1!!!) so have 17 years of paying for it to be held on retention - doh.
