I am from UK and am in the stage of replacing the starter motor as it is showing signs of wear making some funny noises.
My car Like yours a 2006 325i se coupe 2.5 litre petrol N52N engine. Recently I have changed many sensors, because of various fault codes and replacing these has not solved my issue. Having said this my car now has travelled some 70,000 miles therefore i thought to replace as many sensors as necessary to avoid issues down the road. The Crankshaft sensor being one of them, plus oxygen sensors bank 1 and bank 2, camshaft position sensors, Vanos selonoids, and maff sensor they all may not need replacing however if replacing the starter motor then the crankshaft sensor for me is a must as although they are not expensive the job kills two birds with one stone as the crankshaft sensor is an important unit as it controls your engine running, without it no engine so go ahead and replace as many as you can before they are actually needed. Also check your Crankshaft pully serpentine belt drive, these pullies deteriorate and the rubber perishes causing shredded serpentine belt, and if this happens at speed then the belt can be sucked into engine through the timing chain seal, any signs of wear replace this immediately. All above will pay dividends and keep records as they add value to the car.
