Potential positives:
-quicker throttle response - No, how would a 700whp capable centrifugal compressor be more responsive than small twin snails.
-shorter charge pipes - not by much
-better exhaust flow characteristics - in expense of parasitic loss, doesn't mean anything
-potentially cheap - Nope

Potential negatives:
-less efficient
-worse fuel economy
-supercharger whine
-need new belts

Discuss, I've got my flame suit on.
Yea, it's a stupid idea.

Will a mod erase this thread? Audi and Mercedes fans could be lurking.

Never mind the split crank in the N54's that can not handle anything over the low 500 BHP range ......and to answer your next question no they do not offfer a aftermarket forged crank yet and maybe never will

Too bad it still probably had exhaust leaks.

The first intelligent thought in this whole thread.

A turbo is basiclly more efficent- the lost power through exhaust restriction is more than compensated for by the blower side of the equation (obviously). A turbo can also be pesky, difficult to tune, laggy, lack low end and difficult to package, among other things. On the up side, I remember an article on a Ford GT swapping it's positive displacement blower for a couple GT35's and the power was just insane; somewhere close to 1000hp on pump gas I believe.

A good positive displacement blower is superior cheap balls-out fun, even on a little MR2 motor. Easy to work with, can be difficult to package depending on the application; gives truely instant-on boost as they operate under a boost condition from the moment you hit the on button (the bypass valve keeps the blower from operating under boost while sitting at a stop light which would make it hot and inefficent; but soon as you like, at any rpm, stomp on it and that little valve closes and bam..).

Swapping turbos for a Vortech doesn't make any sense at all (not that it's not a good thought tho). The centrifigals are essentially higher loss, lower efficency belt-driven turbos who typically don't see any real power gains until 2500-3000rpm or more. Peak output can be VERY high however. They make GREAT add-on's to otherwise torquey motors which may not be as efficent at higher rpm's; natural torque gets the party started and the blower takes over half way through.

The down side to the blower set up is that it can place an extremely high load on the crank; a blower can require up to and over 100hp just to drive the unit at boost

not so....that looks like it is chad's car. He stopped running that setup because it was never the route he planned on going in the first place.

It really never had any major problems...and it was being tuned with a very simple universal piggyback at the time.

I have both that same blower and turbo kit sitting in my garage. Although for me there were on two different Tiburons.

We dont have a 135i, or upgraded turbos. We have a single turbo 335i in the works.

Regardless, the centrifugal blowers are far from a good idea, IMHO. And the OE cranks have already seen 480-500whp with no issues thus far, so I am not sure where this 500hp crankshaft limit # is coming from - but I think someone pulled it out of thin air

hows the fuel system holding up with a single turbo? or are you not that far yet?

where would the single turbo fit? where the twins are in place?
