Alternatively, you could just buy the oil from BMW... they won't get it wrong for sure.

You may be right, my info is from the 2008 manual I got online.

You sure that's what they'd approve for Canada too? Many cars believe it or not have different factory specs for US vs. Canadian cars, including oil viscosity and service intervals. And that's why in that link, they specifically say:

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

when i called last summer, bmw told me the only recommended oil was castrol syntec and the bmw-branded oil at the dealer.
