I just picked up a set of the new Osram CBI (Cool Blue Intense) 5000k bulbs. Lit them up on the bench and they look sick! They are supposed to have more light output than a 4300k bulb but are 5000k in color.

cheers!
any pics ?

Unpossible by definition, unless you change the ballasts and draw more power.

6000k bulbs are not only illegal in the US but they are illegal for a good reason - they reduce your visibility and increase glare for oncoming drivers.

While the regulation does not define "white," all manufacturers use bulbs in the 4300k range because that is the only bulb that produces "white" light.

Really? I have been running Philips 6700k D1S with my OSS lights without issues. I even went so far as to drive into a State Trooper Troop stop on the GSP, soliciting their opinion. They told me they saw no problems legally with them. Extreme? Probably. Those SUPER BLUE clown lights, well, they are another matter.

Of course they are illegal. But that just depends on how closely the inspection stations check.

Please read FMVSS 108 and the corresponding SAE spec on "white light." then read the requirements for replacement bulbs.

I can see where a 6000k bulb could be seen as illegal but the new Osram CBI which is a 5000k bulb is factory equipment in the new S-class merc. So I would venture a guess that its DOT approved.

Also the total lumen output from most standard 4200k OEM bulbs is rated at 3200 lumens and the new CBI gives you 5000k at 3400 lumens of total output.
