Good luck. I'm sure you'll get you car working again, I'm just curious to see how much interaction from Cobb is required.

UPDATE:

well i went to my car and started it up and i guess i have a regenerative car because my radio was working again. Did nothing but let it sit over night. Im currently in the car and its still taking a long time to "memorize the ecu". Been here 10 minutes and its at 18%. So im still looking at a 50 min process but as long as my car works "stock like" after this 50 min i can wait till i talk to cobb. Just hope the radio still works after this attempt and nothing else pops up and my battery makes it through (3rd hour-long reflash in 2 days)

It's not uncommon for modules to crash during flash tuning. Normally you just lock the doors and wait 20 min and everything resets itself. The long read/write times are a cause for concern though powering off the battery alone. I would suggest a charger to avoid any potential major headache.

A healthy car battery should have no issue with this, especially if you've driven it in between. It can take higher draws for longer periods without being drained. The external power is really only needed if you're battery is not in good condition, the car has been sitting for a long time, or you're going to do it multiple times without driving in between. It's on the extreme side of caution to hook up a charger to healthy battery for this process.

There are so many different software revisions this was bound to happen. I think Cobb should have gained a larger sample of BMW before they released.

UPDATE 2: Well Robb actually called me while it was dumping the ecu and my bluetooth picked up which interrupted the signal and stopped the current dump (SOOO if youre going to have your phone in the car while messing with ECU turn off the bluetooth).

Anyway he said it can be normal for it to take an hour to get the information from the ECU. It depends on whether it is a completely new ROM file or not. Since mine has never been seen it takes longer to get the file than the normal 10-20 minutes.

As for the radio like Mike said above, Rob said that sometimes after a long dump the radio turns itself off but will usually reset after a few key cycles and some time so no worries (FYI my radio stopped working again during this dump but now i know it will reset).

So to summarize. There never was an issue. Sometimes ECU can take an hour to dump, and the radio buttons may stop working but will recover.

Rob got the message and called me on a saturday while he was with family, talk about customer service

Anxiously awaiting monday and the new power, Yogi out.

Where are you in Texas? I could have helped you out with this too-- it took a couple attempts and a somewhat lengthy first run to extract my ROM.

I'm also curious which DME version you have and when your car was produced. I have a 2010 335i (steptronic) built in December '09 and have been using the Cobb tune for at least two weeks.

Not sure on the DME (is there a way to check that)
Not sure on build date (is there a way to check that, maybe in the door jam?)
Car went into service in Jan/2010

Mine is also a 335i 2010 (steptronic). Mines a sedan, not sure if yours is coupe or sedan.

PM sent.

could you keep your windows down during this? That way you can just climb out? Or perform flash from outside vehicle, leave while updating, then come back?

(I have stick so i would need to climb in anyway to turn the car on but I am just curious)

I would guess you could even open the doors and get in/out and stuff or leave windows down. But i always like to monitor the process and change as little as possible.

The easiest way would be to roll down the driver window and close the driver door. The cable is long enough for the AccessPORT to be used while standing outside the car, and once the dump or install process is started, just leave the AccessPORT on the driver seat until complete.

These BMW ecu's can trace their linage to the HAL9000 series so I wouldn't be sitting in the vehicle while trying to wipe out it's memory - just ask Dave

Agreed, this is already annoying.

maybe having a battery charger connected to the car would help preserving the battery and give som piece of mind....

I agree. Spending 65.00 for a batter charger is a small price vs a dead battery leaving your ECU in limbo.

This type of panic....just joking of course. Reading this post reminded me of this GIF. Reading this thread does give some insight of steps to take to flashing the ECU. Tell ya the truth I would have hit the roof. I am sure Cobb will help get it back to the expectation. Now I know to get the charger for the AP.
