If that is the case, go with Bluefin. It is a cheaper alternative and plus probably give the same performance gain.

Does anyone know what impact these tunes have on your Steptronic box???

Are the auto and the clutch packs rated for such high torque??

The BlueFin gives something like 165kw and 455nm!!

If yes, please provide a link that validates the fact...

Cheers...

Real OEM show our transmission as being a GA6HP19Z.

This link shows the maximum rating of 400Nm:

Thanks for the link...

I did a little google research and found out it is a:

"GA6HP19Z TU" model - (designed for maximum torque of 400 Nm)

Seems the box can handle more torque, but the Torque Converter is the issue - it is rated at only 400nm... which sucks big time!!

A tune pushing nm's to 455 like the Bluefin will work a treat for 10k or more... but apparantly will weaken the box considerably, thus reducing the overall reliability of the auto...

Well that sucks!!!

Would that apply to my 2009 E92 Auto box with Bluefin. Superchips reckon they will step in to cover warranty every year for £42...??

Yes, if yours is the single turbo engine then it's the same.
I ordered my Bluefin from Peter last week. Should be delivered this week. I'm getting a service, oil flush and change etc... from my mechanic this week and I'll do the remap straight after.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I went out at the weekend and swapped out the 17" wheels it came with for some aftermarket 19" CSL reps. Funny how one mod leads to another

Ok it seems from late 2007 BMW uses the second generation ZF boxes.

The internal code from BMW is GA6HP19Z TU - but the real ZF name is 6HP21 - and this is now rated to 450nm - phew!!

There's a million pages to explore, make google your friend - here is but only one..

Phew.....

As a side note, Evolve ($1800 154kw/415Nm) sent me the following details regarding their warranty:

We also offer a 5 year guarantee on all our software covering you against software failure or accidentally being re-flashed by your dealer inadvertently. This can occur during any normal dealer update which can happen from time to time. It is a rare occurrence but in the event that this should happen if you bring your car back to us we will re-tune your car FOC with the exception of a small labour charge. We also have a 12 month/30,000km mechanical warranty valid for up to $15,000 that covers you incase any damage occurs and is deemed fault of our tune. This has never been claimed to date and is mainly there to give customers such as yourself confidence that their vehicle warranty will be safe.

Well that was exciting. I received the Bluefin on Friday, downloaded the map off my car and uploaded it to the Superchip servers in the UK. Minutes later I had the remap downloaded and installed on the bluefin.
Saturday morning it gets interesting... After waiting 30 minutes for the remap to upload I pull the plug (it should take about 8 minutes). The car is bricked. All the error codes come on and it won't start.
Full credit to Peter, the local Bluefin rep. He talks me through getting the original map re-installed and the car comes back to life. He was very understanding and even offered to shout a hire car till fixed if we were unsuccessful.
We are now waiting for the tech-heads in the UK to figure out what happened. I fully expect to be reporting back in a couple of days with a big grin on my face.....

In late 2009 BMW started encrypting their ECUs, effectively blocking third party remap tools. You should drop a line to Bluefin and check if you can get it remapped in the first place.

As for a review...

Their pricing is crazy I think.

$1800 for a tune??? I think not.

Get that price around $1400 to $1500 and watch the customers come - including me!!

I'd be there in a heartbeat.

But $1800..... Not a chance!!

Yeah, $1800 seem very steep especially when I know in UK, people only pay $295 pound for a tune. I too will consider paying $1400 knowing that Motorline BMW are happy to honour the new car warrenty.

Speaking of tuning, I actually sent back my DPChip back to supplier for a re-tune to suit my 330d. DPChip are happy to service and re-tune my DP31 piggy back chip for $150 and provide me with detail instructions to put on my 330d. I dont use that DPChip any more since I got a bluefin for my X5 so it make good sense to re-use the $1395 chip that is sitting around doing nothing. Regardless, I will probably still get a Evolve Switch or Bluefin if they can crack the encription to remap via OBDII.

Will let u know how I go!

So I put the new map on about a week ago. I think my initial 'brick' episode was, in all honesty, down to me not having the ignition fully on when trying to upload the new map first time round.

Kudos to Bluefin/Superchips for calmly taking me through the process.

Does it feel like a new car? No.
Have I noticed better fuel consumption. No.
I am I glad I did it. Yes!

The car feels subtly better during normal driving. Just that little bit more urgent, more willing to respond. And when I flick it into hoon mode (sports/manual) I can break traction in third (albeit briefly if nanny controls are on). But it's not the difference between night and day and anyone who thinks that a $650 tune that is guaranteed to keep the engine within tolerances is going to give them a new car is kidding themselves.

As for fuel economy, I generally drive short distances round central Sydney so wasn't expecting much anyway.

Anyway, in my book, money well spent. Easily the cheapest way of squeezing that bit more from your bimmer (unless getting rid of run flats counts.....).
