The pinouts are the same.... as are the voltage signals each is expecting to receive from multiple sensors... they're both utilizing the exact same sensors... are you familiar with the differences between SPI & CANbus? In a nutshell, CANbus allows multiple nodes/microcontrollers to communicate directly to one another (vs. a central timing source/master/host), and just throws in the added complexity of addressing. I would be willing to bet the tuning logic is the same, as in, when you look at the RPM vs load tables, the axes and limits are going to be the same default, or else modifying voltage inputs to a certain fixed amount would not have the same effect on each DME (it does, evidenced by the piggys).

This is further supported by the fact that the MSD80 has also been configured to run CANbus protocol (i.e. 2008's). My bet is that it's merely a difference of communication protocol... if you can't "talk" to it, you can't reflash it. My bet is once they figure out how to interface with the DME, changing the same parameters will yield the same results. In other words, I highly doubt they have to start over from scratch per se, I would think that at most they have to change a few pin locations on the dongle (assuming BMW changed the proprietary portion of the OBD-II port) and change protocol settings. Last I checked, I believe there were only 5 different OBD-II signal/communications protocols in current existence (CAN being one of them), and I believe vehicles sold in the U.S. after 2008 are now required to run CANbus... but I digress.

It would be nice if Cobb would chime in and shed some light

I do like the idea of Cobb but it seems like a lot of wait and catchup! I'm an 07 stage 3 with meth and nitrous ready and its pretty obvious I'll be waiting a while. I am dying to try Cobb out plus have a great pro-tuner close by to custom tune but the wait is gonna kill me! Track opens in April and forget support for 07, stage 2 for current versions haven't hit the streets yet.

As far as I know, the 2007 cars use an entirely different protocol for flashing. They use a serial protocol while the higher years use a protocol over CAN bus.

I agree with the OP, when Cobb first released the AP they mentioned that the 2007 AP would likely be released by the end of January. My thoughts are that they did not anticipate having to add so many ROM updates, firmware updates and make so many other minor tweaks for the 2008-2010's. My guess is that those tasks have taken up more of their engineer's time than they originally expected.

With that said, I would truly like to know & understand the process from a technical perspective, and see where they're at in that process. Cobb is generally pretty open about things... it would be awesome if they would post a breakdown to what all is involved in this process. While I'm no ECU hacker/engineer, at the same time I'm no stranger to tuning, and possess an IT/Networking degree & have worked in telecom/IT for over 8 years now, so I would hope that I would be able to wrap my brain around it.

I'm curious if the 2007 ECU/DME's are so drastically different that they require starting over from scratch per se, or if it's just a difference in communication protocol... the latter is my assumption based on the fact that the piggybacks are all interchangeable, which means the pinouts have to be the same, and the piggys are able to alter the same settings for both regardless of the protocol.

A basic breakdown of what needs to be done would alleviate a lot of curiosity.

Maybe Cobb will chime in?
didn't BMW do that due to a data security issue on the MSD80 rather than some alleged inability to flash it (after all - they update the damned software version every other week it seems)?
