Agreed, no status is worth the hours spent on-call! If you love driving for driving's sake... the 330i would be the more enjoyable of the options. If you can swing it financially you might want to think about leasing a 335i... Smokin' car with no worries about maintenance issues in your residency and a 3 year lease will almost get you to the end when money, although not falling from trees, will at least be considerably better then the $2/hour residency salary probably works out to!!

Cheers

Tell us where you matched! That may play a role in which car you get.

I could afford a new 5, but I chose the 3 because it's more fun.

Why would you be stuck with an automatic, if only to have your gf/wife drive you home after drinking? That's the only reason I can think of. Not a bad reason, but not great, either.

Get the newest car you can. Consumer Reports gave 2-5 yo 5's pretty crappy reliability marks. Why do you need more room? Kids? Go with the 2006 330.

And congratulations on the match!

I matched in Anesthesiology, and will likely do a Pain Medicine fellowship. There will be times when the wife will need the car, and a stick won't do, unfortunately. The 335 lease is looking tempting now - the economically smart part of me is holding me back, though. It's just hard for me to conceptualize the pay change I'll have in the future. If I did the lease, I'd probably do it with the intention to finance later (to keep for another year or 2). Like I said, I'm interested in doing some mild modding, and having TT makes that oh so easy - hence the finance at lease end.

...what to do
