There's a difference between racing and doing a HPDE. That's when it gets kind of grey, but most insurance companies will not covery anything on a track, even if it's a school.

Many policies state if your car is on a track used for racing events you will not be covered. It does not matter if the event was a race or HPDE.

I've been trying to find one that does not have this wording but have come up empty handed. Geico, Farmers, Mercury, State Farm all have these statements for California policies.

I just completed another BMWCCA-sponsored drivers' school (HPDE) at Lime Rock today without supplemental track insurance.

IMO, track-based HPDEs are MUCH safer than driving on public roads for the following reasons:

+ All the cars on the track are inspected and in good condition;

+ All the cars on the track are going in the same direction;

+ All the drivers (run groups) on the track have similar experience and abilities;

+ Drivers on the track aren’t drunk, talking on cell phones, texting, drinking coffee, applying lipstick, yelling at their children, or otherwise distracted;

+ Most importantly, there are controls built into the curriculum to promote safety such as in-car instructors, flaggers, etc.

IMO, any automobile insurance company that doesn’t recognize the inherent safety and instructional value of club-sponsored HPDEs, simply isn’t earning their customers' hard-earned premium money every month…

Agree but accidents happen. For the most part those accidents are not covered by mainstream insurance companies.

If you can't afford to write it off it shouldn't be on a track or you should have track day insurance.

^ Fair enough. My occasional HPDE car is my stock E46 M3 and even though it’s paid-off, I still carry full coverage on it (including drivers’ schools). Just in case a potential claim isn’t covered for some reason, I also subscribe to the philosophy that you shouldn’t track a car that you can’t afford to demolish.

The cost is well worth it. Luckily, I have never had to use but I know the one time I didn't get I would wish I had. I guess that is why it's called insurance.

Must be nice to be able to demolish a 30k car without worry

People have said Liberty Mutual will cover HPDE, as long as there's not timing/racing going on.
