Agree. This will be a great topic once warranties start expiring.

Just ask the guys in the desert....Oman, Kuwait, Dubai, etc. They're members and I'm assuming their E92s are doing just fine....even with the fine dust.

He is being facetious, reference the early rumors about the 335's engine overheating and blowing up.

Hard to say, best to sell it within warranty period to be safe.

I highly doubt the e92 engine is anything close to the 2jz. The 2jz had forged internals which made it handle insane amounts of horsepower very well. Someone mentioned this already but the 335 is essentially the e46 block with 2 turbos slapped on.

If they used a N/A I6, you couldn't get the big gains that we get with the TT motor. It would cost 5K for like 10-20HP......

Interestingly BMW have moved to Borg-Warner for their new Diesel turbos

Shiv seems a bit concerned with the tiny turbos, but for reasonable everyday driving I expect 200,000 miles without major issues. So does the wife...

The engines are very reliable. With just upgraded oil coolers, two 335s ran the 12HR endurance race at Bathurst a couple weeks ago. They set the fastest laps of all the other cars (mainly STis and Evos). And came in 1st and 4th place. And they were tuned to make substantially more power than stock. No cooling issues. No turbo failures. No transmission problems. Nada. Pretty remarkable for a first racing attempt on a brand new engine/platform.

Shiv,
Can you provide anymore info on the upgraded oil coolers that were used?

Just a single large oil cooler in the mouth of the car. In place of the AC condenser (which was removed).

Pretty darn good advice, this. ^^ I would highly reccomend it as you are bound to get problems, albeit, not all from the engine.

I've had quite a few problems with the electric system in 7 months ownership. Pass. seatbelt motor went out. Tail light went out (even though there was no visual indication).

I think I was one of the first people to get this car. It was built last July. Only about 2500 miles, though.

Funny... i'm the exact opposite. If it weren't for the turbo platform I never would have been interested in the 335 to begin with, especially if it put out less power then the E46 M3. If it weren't for tuning, I would have a different car on order right now.
Exactly, if the 335i wasn't coming out, I'd still be in my Evo. I love BMW's, but right now, I can not afford anything of the M caliber..and until the 335i's those were all the fast ones.

If You Want Something Reliable, Go Purchase A Lexus. I Had A 2000 Gs 300 And 2002 Gs300, Not Once Did This Car Ever Give Me A Issue On Anything.

Shiv

How many folks on this forum read/know as much as our boy Shiv...?? Not many...

For one, BMW spent the last 3 years doing real-world testing on turbo-chargers and modifying the block to make it lighter, stronger, and more capable...sure you can tune it, sure you can drive it to your liking...BUT the only thing that may ever go wrong is a component feeding the powerplant, not the engine itself.

I say, mod it if you want to...don't if it's not your thing and you want a more sensible car.

If you need to hear turbo whine and blow-off noise...maybe this isn't the car for you all...go back to the Evo and keep watching Fast and Furious...if you want a car with class, precision, and good power this IS the car for you.

Take good care of it, and it'll be reliable...you're only going to get as much from your ownership relationship as you put into it...slap on a bunch of mods and drive it into the ground and you'll be getting a newer car within 2 years.

So far, IMHO, this 335 is one of the smoothest, and purest BMW driving experiences...and in a 3ser.

The N54 motor is not an E46 block with 2 turbos slapped on. Hence why it has a new number, the E46 block is N52. There is literature explaining the differences posted in this forum. A big difference is that the N54 motor has a forged steel crankshaft as opposed to the cast iron unit used by the N52.

Right now the more limiting factor in developing high power from the N54 engine is the fuel system not the motor internals. Direct injection is a newer development. The ECU controls need to be reverse engineered along with the injectors, fuel pumps, and pistons. It will all happen eventually. The aftermarket industry just needs to get acclimated to the potential of direct injection.

When asked about what the aftermarket industry can do about direct injection a Siemens engineer replied, "cry." This was even in private conversation. I think that might be a bit dramatic of a response. It will take the aftermarket some time to get it though, time and a lot of money.

Actually the E46 motor was the M54, The N52 is the magnesium block engine first introduced in the E90.
