Here is my cars info - 2008 6MT FBO+meth, ACT clutch, open diff, 51k miles.

Here is the situation - driving down the street and I decide to get on it. I'm in 3rd gear and I floor it. This is from around 3000 rpm or so. Car starts accelerating very quickly, boost builds up, meth starts spraying making boost go up more then.....BOOM. Car bucks, makes a loud pop and instantly loses power. My first inclination is I blew my charge pipe off (this has happened a few times). So I give it a little gas to see on the gauge if any boost is made. Then I hear a nice metallic clanking/scraping noise. That's when I say "oh shit, this could be bad".

The aftermath - the car made a lot of really nasty metallic noises as I pulled into a parking lot. The kind of noises that make you die a little inside each time you hear them. The good news is that the car was idling fine after and revved fine as well while not in gear. Car sometimes would make weird noises when I would put the shifter into first and made a lot of bad noises if I tried to roll forward at all in gear.

What's your guess?

i say most likley somthing in the clutch or trans internals specifically the sun/planitary gears

Update: for now it looks like the CV joint on the driveshaft is bad. There is a lot of grease in that area and around that has been splattered. We won't know for sure until we can take the driveshaft off, so we are waiting to get the driveshaft tool from AR.

Drive the car on a lift. If the driveshaft spins you know it's okay, at least at this point. If one axle spins and the wheel doesn't, you'll have your answer. Set the park brake if there is no noise while the car is in the air, it'll give it a load and make the problem obvious.

if you broke the half shaft you wouldnt be moving. i've blown my cv joint once and couldnt move. ive also had a broken diff back when i first had the car and when i would be driving you would hear a weird clonking noise coming from the diff area

heres a picture of my half shaft that broke. grease was everywhere btw

While on the lift, the axles didn't spin when applying the throttle. Metallic noise was coming from the CV joint on the driveshaft. That is also where the grease is. So most likely it is the CV joint, but could be the input shaft into the diff. Haven't visually confirmed anything yet, but will as soon as the driveshaft tool comes in.

Half shafts are ok. As of now it looks to be the CV joint on the driveshaft. Hopefully will have 100% confirmation today.

Where's AR or HPF.....weren't you guys developing a lightweight aluminum driveshaft (rated @ 1000hp)? I been dying to get my hands on one as long as there are no vibrations or loud noises.

I agree. No aftermarket options that I could find. Sucks to pay $600 for another stock one that might possibly break again.

Go to a junk yard on eBay or something. You can find it for like 130 I think n then ship it to get upgraded

Now the question is which recourse do I take? The downtime for my car must be minimized as it is my DD, although I can get away from using it for a few days. Weeks would not be acceptable.

1. Buy a new stock driveshaft $600
2. Buy a used driveshaft from a wreck ~$150 (and wait til someone comes out with an upgraded one)
3. Buy a used one and send it off to get upgraded (time constraint may make this option not available)

What are your thoughts? Do you think a DS from a wreck would be unmolested? Is a new stock one just going to break again? Is it better to hope a used one will last until there in an upgrade?

Its such an unsual failure, I don't think even anyone on upgraded turbos or nitrous have reported issues. I don't think you have to worry about it happening again with another driveshaft, unless there is something in your car specifically causing this to happen.

I'd buy 2 used...

One to install and the other to upgrade if you foresee this happening again.

I was thinking the same thing. I think this is the only DS failure I have heard of on this car...

that or just 1 used and wait for an upgrade to come out, I think a few are in the works!
