Took to BMW dealer that confirmed oil leaks.. So now they are trying to get assistance with BMWNA... Lets see how that goes..

Really hope this gets worked out for you. They should have caught and fixed the issues the first time you complained about it. Seems like the dealer didn't do any checks to be honest...your pics and the oil on the plugs should have been a dead give away had they actually looked.

BMW NA declined my claim, basically told me to take it up with my dealership. Needless to say, flaming post can be found under dealer review section.. I replaced valve cover gasket myself, plenty of DIY out there.. Will be paying indy shop to do rear main seal.

Here is the thread describing what has happened..
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816737 According to BMW NA Princeton did not return two phone calls and several emails on this issue. Granted, according to the rep, thats not why BMW NA declined this. So I am SOL. Filed complaint with BWM NA, the incident is well documented with the company. Bad rep and not going back there ever again is the only thing I can do now. My rear started leaking at 103k, so had it resealed with indy shop.. Very please with experience, those guys will be doing my rear main seal as well.. Pictures of the job inlcuded as well.. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816728

Ive had my 325i e90 for almost 2 years now and have put 30k miles on it (currently 80k) and I drive it hard at some point every day. I have no problems whatsoever with oil consumption. Ive changed the oil 2 times myself and once had my local indy do it and im due a change as soon as summer rolls around now but my car has never given me any trouble. Id say that if mine doesnt and other peoples dont then your car shouldnt be burning oil.

I agree with this, 230 PSI struck me as what too high. Every BMW engine I've seen has a cylinder spec of what is quoted. I'll check the Bentley and see if they quote the proper cylinder pressure for the N52.

If you found spark plugs No. 3 and 4 sitting in oil when you went to change them, then the dealer DID NOT perform an engine compression test and ripped you off for $500. If they had performed the compression tests they would have found the plugs bathed in oil like you did because the compression test is performed by attaching a pressure meter to the cylinder using the spark plug hole. If they try and say that they didn't find such a condition and it must have happened afterwards, that is total BS because the valve cover gaskets would not leak that much oil in such a short time period. Get your money back. |

Wow, disgusting situation indeed! Well, can pretty much say that I am in the same boat as far as a problem that has persisted and was not sorted out by the agents while the car was still under motorplan - the pinging issue that is. It really has negatively affected my feelings towards the brand and what these cars stand for. Sadly I think these N52's are great engines if all is fine, but the moment they start to pick up niggles you are stuffed as far as relying on the agents to fix the problem - I think in most cases this is why they just replace engines.
With regards to oil consumption, these engines are known to use oil to a certain extent, and like the old concept of the more fuel is burned usually relates to an increase in oil consumed, but in terms of manufacturer specs (not sure if it is the same over there), in the manual it states that as much as a litre (quart) every 1000km (600 miles) is within tolerance! This seems to be a general spec across most brands apparently. With my Isuzu diesel, the manual states a litre of oil used per 100 litres of diesel is acceptable - crazy! But in reality this thing hardly uses a drop between services. Now with my 330i also being a '05 model, but with low mileage (currently 69k km), I have also seen oil consumption since taking ownership in mid 2010 when it only had 46k km, of course was also a CPO and I am the second owner. But when I took delivery and started to get the know the car I noticed that the oil level on the electronic dipstick was on the 50% mark, and a few months later dropped to 25%, and then by the end of the year it was asking for a litre. My calculations told me that it had then done roughly 6500 km since the last service, and therefore in this time consumed a litre of oil. Topped up and next time around which was a month or so before its next service it asked for another litre, this time having done 8100 km. Engine serviced and then the pinging issues started with a few months left on motorplan, changed the oil a few weeks ago after doing more than 10k km and the oil level was still on the 25% mark for a few months, so probably just off minimum in reality, but better than before and hoping that this trend continues! Generally, my driving style is more economy based than driving the nuts off it, especially with the pinging problem, but it does get the occasional WOT to clear out the cobwebs, and is never used for short trips such that the engine is not allowed to reach operating temperature etc Now the thing is, oil consumption and oil leakage are of course two very different things. Oil consumption means the oil is of course being burnt as part of the combustion process due to blow-by gases or worn rings etc. But an oil leak such that you are losing a litre in a relatively short period of time/mileage, you would have to somehow see traces of it, and by this I mean on your garage floor, unless it is dripping on the exhaust and burning off, and then you would smell it! What amazes me about this thread (and others where people are having mechanical issues) is the lack of back up service from the various agents, and let's face it, these are not cheap cars and things like service plans, motorplans, CPO cost lots of money to have, so why are they failing us so regularly?! |

Thanks gents.. Sent dealership numerous emails and calls to try to get my money, so far nothing. Will be going over there next week.. Lets see how that goes.
I have fixed VCG, and oil consumption has gone down. Ended up replacing vent hose also, what a pain in the butt that was, since I had to remove intake manifold. Inspected intake valves, and they looked brand new. It amazed me how clean they were at 106k miles. N52 are great engines, and I am expecting to get another 100k miles out of it...

231-232psi is too high. That motor may be heavily carbon'd up. I would suggest using a chemical called Kreen in the oil, use for 1000 miles before draining, and then if the problem persists doing a piston soak with the same chemical. I doubt your consumption will ever go away but it should decrease the consumption significantly. This chemical dissolves carbon.

N52 Engine is toast
Hi All, I also have a BMW E90 325i with the n52b25 engine and it has terrible oil consumption since I owned it. I tried a few things but it made the oil consumption worse. From 1L/1000 all the way down to 1L/300
![]() I suggest you fix all oil leaks, replace your CCV, do a compression test (check the plugs) and if one has a lot of carbon build up on it, thats the cylinder thats burning oil. I filmed the process I went through to troubleshoot the issues and eventually rebuild the entire engine. I have DIY tutorials for all these things on my youtube channel. Start here: Replace CCV: Compression Test: Engine Rebuild Begins here: |

Well you also have a b25 which is known for oil consumption and ring problems. I think most people would be well sorted after a new ccv
