I know it may happen, it doesn't mean that we necessarily need to hear that our cars might have been ragged silly at the dock!! Sometimes ignorance is bliss...

I know this is an old post but i thought I would add to it.

I took a long trip upto cumbria last weekend and i managed to get the MPG to show 51mpg.....YES....50mpg!

I have the 320i petrol and i was amazed. On a full tank it was telling me I would manage over 600 miles!

This gradually dropped when i did some town driving etc but didnt drop below 44mpg.

Can i ask....is it better to reset the mpg every time you fill up, or just leave it and get a general average?

My 320i E93 averaged 27mpg over 2 tanks of petrol, I do keep the gearbox in DS mode though to try and make it move when my foot moves.

I think the engine and weight of the car make the figures look worse that they should be, If I do 60mph and reset the trip i can get a nice 42mpg!

What a piece of tosh compared to the book figures 10% out more like 34% out, but there is a known problem with this engine.

I'm getting about 37mpg at the mo... the second gear can be a little juddery when you put your foot down if you've been taking it easy - I guess this is the winderful ED working its magic

I get 22mpg driving through London every day for work. A lot of time spent stuck in traffic and moving pretty slowly.

Even when i've been on Motorways (at normal speeds) I still only get about 30mpg.

I have a 318i M Sport - the 'efficient' ED, post Sept 07 version, and the highest I have seen, over about 6 weeks of running the car so far, is 34 mpg.

Usually it's closer to 31 mpg, that's over motorways, b roads and around town. Seems pretty bad to me. I have a fuel card from work, so I don't obsess about petrol costs, but this is running at about 50 quid a week!

Mixed use, not much motorway work, but most of the time pretty light on the throttle, gives 32mpg at best.....320i Auto

Guys,

A typical average of 31mpg for a 320i seems pretty poor to me - I would expect 35 to 37.

The 330i should return this - I think BMW combined figure is something like 37mpg for the 330i although doubt it will ever get above 34mpg in the real world (10% rule again). What is it for the 320i?

I get 36.6mpg from my 330d and thats been tuned. I got 36.2mpg before tuning and will get 42mpg on a long Motorway run. I also have an auto box and drive swiftly when I can.

Think there is a good case for a 320d over a 320i.

With the 6 cylinder engines I don't think the difference is that great between Diesel and Petrol and offset to some degree by the dearer Diesel fuel anyway.

I'm doing a bit better than you with my manual untuned 330d then. Had my worst ever trip mpg yesterday on my 11 mile commute with 3 miles of unusually bad congestion - still 38 mpg. Average from new (850 miles) is 44, and a 25 mile motorway trip to my parents is typically around 48. Best trip mpg so far was 55 over 50 miles of rural A and B roads. How many miles do you get on a tank? I got 570 on the first one.

I am lucky to get over 450miles in my 330d, the OBC shows 36-38mpg and that is £50 on derv a week at least too.

I never let the tank get too low - never into the red anyway and generally the OBC says I have approx 100 miles left when I top it up. So I tend to fill it up after I've done about 400 miles -

£60 fills it up after covering 400 miles
D is say £1.20 a litre x 4.54 = £5.45 a gallon
£60 / £5.45 = 11.01 Gallons
400 miles / 11.01 = 36.33mpg
OBC Average over last 5 tanks is 36.6mpg
So OBC is pretty accurate.

44mpg in a 330d Manual is extremely good - I've only ever had this from a 1.9Tdi
I bet your back tyres last 40,000 miles? lol

I am staggered to see how the 330i can be at least as fuel efficient as the 320i - it just seems wrong!

All I can assume is that the 320i needs to be worked pretty hard in comparrison to say a 330i to get from A to B

Of course given differing usage patterns, the only true comparison would be to get a bunch of us together and drive the same route at the same time and compare them all afterwards, otherwise it's a bit meaningless However I'm confident my mpg will settle at worst at around 10% less than the official combined figure which it has done with almost every car with my usage pattern. At the moment it's only 5% less and the engine hasn't fully loosened up yet.
