Attached is BMW repair for this code.
Basically as others stated, it's from the crystallization of the meter module. Really no way to prevent this, other than maybe drive more often. I would think cleaning the module is not very difficult. |

Just had this happen to my 2010 with 63k miles.
same issues, SES for P20ee turned out to be code 004D16. Dealer replaced both NOx sensors. covered under extended warranty but emissions warranty trumped it and used that instead so no deductible. |

After 3 weeks at the dealership, they replaced the SCR pipe and mixer to fix the 4D16 code, under emissions warranty 08/80,000.
Prior to that they replaced the thermostat and a coolant change, urea tank change, etc to address this code. Car feels a lot less sluggish surprisingly. Guess dirty SCRs have an effect on performace. I'm just glad I had an X1 loaner for Blizzard Juno. The X1 did very well. |

Mostly love, but sometimes hate...
I was travelling back from Winter Park, CO, and my SES light came on out of the blue. Had that "problem" before, so kept driving. Got codes checked in Logan, UT - P022. Yup. DeNOx efficiency, had that before.
It went away sometime today (on trip from Boise to Seattle). Hate that code. Really nothing wrong, just stupid engineering with too low limits, and a too complicated system. BTW, got over 35.1 mpg over about 2600 miles, with almost all of it at 65 or higher, about 1/3 at 85 (indicated, about 83 actual per gps). I was a bit higher until the headwinds today. |

So I got this P20EE / 4D16 code the other day and after a couple of days of it still being active, it would not reset on its own, I took it into the dealership to have them look at it. It's a CPO and this happened at 61k miles.
Got an update yesterday and was told the car will be out for 3 weeks until they can get the part from Duetchlund (Germany). Was told that my D has a priority flag and will be one of the first to get it. The part(s) they are replacing is the entire exhaust system from manifold to tail pipe. It will come as a single 12 ft section so it sounds like they are replacing the Alphabet soup of parts - DPF, SCR, NOx, baffles, etc. They did not tell me what specific part failed nor if it was based on an SIB. When I find out more, I will post an update. |

That is good that they are replacing the whole emission system. Anyway, my feeling is the emission system is experimental and we (in NA) are the guinea pig.
On my car, most parts of the SCR urea system have been replaced twice and I am only at 67 K miles. |

Old thread, I know.
But my 2011 335d has been in the shop 3 times for SES, in about 3 months. 1. Carbon build up on head and manifold. 2. I cannot remember but mass air flow sounds familiar. 3. some EPA mandated crap covered under fed 8/80. The car looks like the entire exhaust system was replace. And, the light is on again. This time I have my own scanner: P20EE. I'm going to the dealer and pull the maintenance records. I curious about what code(s) they found.

This code JUST happened to me after I purchased a used 2011 X5 35D yesterday for $28K CDN.
I purchased it and drove off the lot of Jim Pattison Toyota and 2kms later the CEL came on. Scanned it and sure enough a P20EE. I kinda suspect this was previously cleared and was most likely sitting at a pending fault during my test drive. The vehicle was on their lot for 3 months so perhaps others who test drove it had that CEL come on and the walked away or it sat without being run for a few months. It literally had 2kms on it since I drove off the lot to home so I REALLY hope they cover and correct this issue under their "30 day powertrain warranty"! I took it out for an additional drive to see if anything showed up drivability wise (an additional 7kms) and it seems to drive without issues. Technically it is powertrain as this will put the X5 into limp mode and cause issues with it running...we will see Monday what transpires. ![]() |
