Is this a program modification the owner did? If so, how did he do it? I really like the 3d feature. Looking at the date 11/06 I can tell its not a new feature. Anyone know anything more about this?

In Japan landmarks are very important for finding places because their house numbers are not sequential like the USA. It does look cool, but it's also functional view to help Japanese people find places.

It's a necessary evil coz it's very hard to drive around in the big cities in Japan because the roads are very narrow and convoluted

I have been living here in Japan for eight years. I have the Japanese HDD Idrive in my 335. I actually find it to be quite helpful with the 3D part if I am in one of those areas where the streets are twisted together like matted dog hair. As someone stated earlier in the thread Landmarks are very important for the majority of the populations. rarely will you ever hear anyone refer to street names. Street names do exist to a limited degree despite the myth that they don't but not often referred to when navigating the streets. In fact in my navi when its giving directions for example, "turn right at the next intersection" it goes on to say "look for 7 eleven" or "look for said gasoline stand" as a landmark for the turn. My screen sometimes splits into 3 to show 3 different parts of the map or upcoming turn. haven't used N.A. based system so I can't compare.

anyway Just thought I would attempt to add a few yens worth about the Japanese system.

Also the 3d is optional... you can turn it off, or put another 2d map with a different zoom level or trip computer or or a few other things i can't remember. it doesn't make the 2d map smaller as some suggested as the 2d map has a max size and it will never be bigger than that regardless of what you have on the right side. also it gets realtime traffic updates and reroutes traffic on the fly (not sure if US BMWs have it).

on a different note, its not so impressive in japan as they have pretty amazing navis with front cameras that overlay map with images and integrate rear/side mirrors.

Why is everything so much more advanced in Japan LOL... Even their iDrive is years ahead of what we get here in the US.

I just stumbled on this. US doesn't have 3-d maps?

HDD is standard for the navi here. The 3-D maps are really useful in Tokyo where the roads are so close together.

Looks cool, but a worthless option. My Garmin nuvi has had 3d for years and I can't stand it.

Well we don't really need the 3D stuff in the USA, the highway/road system is much better organized, THANK GOD.
