Not sure of criteria for taking out warranty on any BMW, mine was AUC and I extended the warranty when theirs ran out. Price will probably vary with mileage. Mine is around 56k. May be more expensive with higher mileage motors.

With regards to claims, BMW insured warranty I think is one of the better ones. I've had no issues claiming. As long as service history is up together, BMW parts are used for any servicing and servicing is done by VAT registered garage you should be OK.

Thing is, if any major component (turbo, HPFP, water pump, etc) goes on your average mileage BMW, not sure what excuses they can give to wriggle free. As long as the above conditions are adhered to you should be OK. Can't comment on other warranties.

Oh, and if your car is modified, make sure you un-modify before any claim. This will almost certainly devoid your claim. Depending on how you modify you car this may not be possible and hence this may not be an option.

Thanks for the input, very interesting ad I thought the same that there would be strict criteria regarding mileage and history to get a warranty

I have a 335i with an extended BMW warranty. I haven't needed to make a claim yet (ive only done 2k miles) so I wouldn't call it a representative example. I did speak with the previous owner and he had experienced none of the common faults associated with the 335i, which he would have gotten fixed with the manufacturer warranty. mine is a 59 plate and one of the last n54 models, so maybe a lot of issues were sorted by this time?

One of my biggest issues with the warranty was having to have the car serviced at BMW who charge a fortune, but after reading the policy handbook and speaking with BMW directly this isn't the case, and servicing can be done elsewhere as long as the recommended products and parts are used.

My warranty is £40p/m with £100 excess and covers pretty much everything, and you can stick a jb4 on and have some worry free performance motoring! much better value car than my previous 335d

If I was you I'd buy your old car back from the insurer, take photos of the damage, have it repaired at a trusted local small bodyshop, then sell it as cat D you should make a decent return between what you get paid out and what you sell it for - then buy a 335i and enjoy it.

I've had 3 x 335i, all out of warranty and have not had any horror stories, just avoid taking it to a BMW main dealer for repairs, best to always find a good local specialist instead (and look for advice on here especially the N54 section of the forum which is fantastic and has saved me a lot).

My current 335i coupe is on 190,000 miles, still on its original turbos, clutch, etc. Waterpump needed changed at 189,000 miles as started leaking (very slight leak). I sourced a good 2nd hand one in total it cost £150 to fix including labour, similar story with HPFP - just avoid going to main dealers if you have problem.

By the sounds of it you are not doing many miles so I would say nothing to worry about just be aware of what to look for when buying one and avoid buying one with problems.

Big expense to be aware of is rattly waste gates if you want this made perfect then new or re-con turbos is the answer, BUT this does not happen suddenly so just check it when buying. Start it from stone cold (one of my 335's had this problem when I bought it and I put up with it for over a year before fixing it using some of the tips on the N54 forum on how to fix it only cost 3 hours labour to resolve).

There is quite a good market for 2nd hand spares on these cars which can also keep the costs down if something needs swopped.

The scaremongers will tell you there is potential for huge problems but my 190k 335i seems ok and has not cost that much to run in the past 24 months.

Other advice get one with smaller wheels the 17" have so much better ride than the large wheeled ones, I've had 19" on my E93 and much prefer the 17" on my coupe, pot holes are not a problem.

Thanks for the input, I did consider buying the car back or keeping the car but wasn't sure if it would be worth repairing and then reselling as a cat d. I put a thread up yesterday about this if you want to check it out as I am confused what route to go down as obviously I want rid of the car and dont want to find myself in a position where I buy the car back and repair it and then it takes ages to sell or I dont recoup the costs etc.

You must have the most reliable N54 335i ever Mine is hardly driven but yet bits just break for no reason, I don't think a warranty is really needed on a 335 since theres so much info around on how to fix the bits that break, but I'm certainly happy I don't have to rely on mine to get to work every day.

I would say my 335 is more reliable than the Peugeot 106 I owned as my second ever car, but compared to the various Nissan/Honda's I've owned it's a money pit in-terms of reliability.....A lovely, comfortable, fast, and best car I've ever owned money pit, never the less still a money pit but I love it. I cannot see my self finding another petrol powered car that does everything so well .
