when I went to the factory tour in Munich....all cars went thru a rev test like on a dyno.....then they reset the ODO and out for shipping....
so they sorta "drive" your engine even before your car is out of the factory...

yes, bmw recommends that you do...

i think its a myth personally...but bmw watches everything you do and i didnt want to lose my warranty
