Well, I checked it out yesterday and that short drive to the shop finished what was started. The mechanic's guess is that something probably made the timing belt skip and now the head is trashed in addition to whatever was already wrong down below. Three rockers snapped and a bunch of valves were probably bent, too.

The shop didn't have the estimates ready when I called this morning and they told me to check back around 11...

I just got a call back. The head and block are both salvageable so a rebuild is possible, but it doesn't make any sense based on the cost. They quoted me:
$3150 to replace the motor with one with < 8k mi
$5050 to do a complete rebuild
$3300 to do a partial rebuild without replacing some parts that are likely still good (pistons)
$1300 to pull out the old motor and install a new one I provide

All of those options are close to or over the value of the car, haha. Looks like I'm going to have to find an engine hoist and do this myself.
