Boost and AFR for me. I MIGHT trust EGT more than a wideband to let me know if something is going south, but that's hard to say.

why don't you just borrow a bmw datalogger and reverse engineer the protocol. if you can learn to flash the ecu (dinan? etc) you most certainly can figure out how to sniff the obd-2 port to datalog the custom channels, bmw extended module specific codes (non-obd2), clear everything. i could have swore they have some sort of portable logging device. just a laptop with a custom cable to convert whatever protocol they use (KWP2000,etc) into serial. i'm suprised nobody has done this.
vag-com for VAG cars was designed by setting down with a vas-1552(sp?) with a sniffer (o-scope and windows layer sniffer [serial port/usb]) to figure out the protocol and coding commands. most everything bmw uses is just pc/laptop based anyways. i guess if there is demand ($$) there is a way just like ecu flashing.

Having a wideband AFR gauge tells you your state of tune, and also indirectly tells you whether EGT will be high or low. I have boost, wideband AFR, oil pressure, EGT just for sake of safety, but if I absolutely had to opt for 2, I would ALWAYS get boost and wideband.
