Granted, if you have some haphazard / poorly rigged wiring in your engine bay, or an exposed intake, you should not let water in your engine bay. That's a given. I'm saying that a) your car from the factory is equipped to handle water under the engine bay b) You should not have exposed wires under your engine bay AT ALL anyways, because your car's chassis is grounded, and one day you will hit a bump and create a short c) If you think your engine bay stays dry in the rain, you are sorely mistaken d) If you have an open intake, that's fine, but you should probably put a goretex sock on that filter if you want to run this hood. That is all. Not sure why PAKMAN thinks it's appropriate to whip his personal and long-standing vendetta against our company out in this thread, but hey, to each his own. We respect him for it anyways. |

How about this - some of you guys show me your intake setups and we'll go from there. What are you all running? Logic? We'll be running a Logic HVI on our 335i with the vented hood, so I'm sure we will figure this out |

I am not sure why you lumped PAKMAN and me together in a response because I have only share legitimate experiences and share my opinion in what potential customers are asking about the hood. Back to what I said about HID foglights, my concern is that not all elements of a HID fog light kit is protected against water. I have seen first hand, people will vented hoods that get water into their HID kits. I am simply bringing that up as a concern that people should be aware of. I never once said that once that no water gets into the engine bay. not once, so please do not put words into my mouth. I am curious about this goretex sock solution you have for open intakes. Where would you get one and does it affect intake performance? |

Minipuck,
I certainly didn't mean to "lump" you in, and I really do appreciate your interest and your questions - it's always good to publicly air out concerns and questions about a product, so I am 100% with you here. Sorry if I came off as defending myself from you specifically - I was more directing my defense at PAKMAN, given our history with him. Anyways, I can't for the life of me find anyone doing a goretex sock, which is funny, because they used to come with Dinan, Benfer, and a few other intakes. Also, there was one around the filter of my VF Engineering supercharger back when I had it... so I know they are out there. Worst case, I will design one and we'll start selling it. It's a really simply little thing. Doesn't decrease airflow more than maybe 5-10%, but won't let water in... just like a windbreaker you would wear which "breathes" but keeps you dry. Impressive little material. Let me wait till I get the 335i in our shop, and then we'll engineer something if need be. Would you be opposed to sending me some specs and photos of your intake system? Thanks JL |

+1 about the gortex socks. I have the dual KN setup. The vent is actually very close to the filters and if I were to be careless and just wash the hood like any other, I can easily drench the cones. For this reason, i try to spray the water from the passenger side rather than directly toward the vent or from the driver's side. The picture that shows where the water would be may be accurate of where water puddles up, but that is not actually where the vents are located on the hood, they are much closer toward the front of the car. In relation to the cones, the vent just misses being directly above it, more to the front and a bit to the right.
here's about where the filters go: |

I honestly don't understand why this is such a big issue. Basically it comes down to this: -if you have open air intakes, you should get the sealed vents version (recommended) or simply aim the water away from the vents -if you don't have an open air intake then you're perfectly fine There are countless people out there running these vented hoods without any problems over the past years so I don't see why all of a sudden there's a concern for it now. |

While reading this whole thread go back and forth, talking about hosing down this, gortex sock that... I thought to myself....
95% of the time you know when its going to rain (weather report, looking up at the syk, etc...) so why not design some type of cover/plug that can be put over the vents or on the underside of the hood? When you think its going to rain put them on, problem solved. I cant see them being that hard to design (if your at all ingenious you could probably design one yourself) they dont have to be water-tight, just good enough to keep most of the rain out. After the rain ends take them off... Waaa-La, You get your cake and can eat it too! |

It might appear that your water sits a bit further back than where it was for mine these were the spots where I found water to be after a simple wash |

edit: the design isn't hard but you probably need something made out of the correct material as well ... its easy to come up with ideas but the manufacturing process takes a little bit more. |
