hope you'd never end up in a situation where you're trying to avoid some item on the road, or stop in an emergency and you weren't able to avoid the hazzard due to cheap long lasting tires.

what are you referring to? if you mean to imply there's dedicated space for a spare in the E90, that is totally incorrect.

I will agree that tires with good grip doesn't last as long as tires with poor grip. Have you checked out the Michelin PS2 or the Goodyear F1 GS-D3? They both offer good grip, better treadlife than the bridgestones. Granted they are not RF's but members are having a hard time right now finding tires with the shortage and you have to consider other tires that could be better. BMWExecutive wrote a great post about the Michelins. Take a look.

Maybe if BMW were forced to reroute RFT from new production vehicles until more tires were built, they would see this as a more serious problem, and get away from runflats for a while. Problem is, it's not affecting their bottom line, so why would they feel the need to do anything about it.

I had Michelin PS2 on my E46 from day one and I can't wait until PS2 RFT release here in U.S. So far RE050II is much better than Perelli any way.

There's an America's Tire Store ad that airs on TV showing an old lady throwing a tire through the front plate glass window of the tire dealer.

Maybe we could organize a mass demonstration countrywide, and all of us wing these runflats thru the BMW dealer's front windows simultaneously.

I am also worried about the RFT. I don't have an E91 yet, but the thought of having a flat in the middle of nowhere in Canada (I know, hard to believe) doesn't really thrill me.

I am more than capable of replacing a tire and would prefer to have a donut, even with the RFT tires. There will be times that you won't be able to drive to a dealer within the recommended mileage as stated by the tire manufacturer.

I checked with Bridgestone regarding tight supplies on RF tires.

They advised that they maintain a "safety stock" at their distribution centers if a car is not drivable because of the need for a RF tire.

The safety stock can be tapped by any Brdigestone Certified Run Flat Dealer.

They also advised that, out of the 22 different RF tire specs for BMWs, only one is in short supply now. No, I don´t know which it is.

I actually don't mind the shot tread life of the Potenza RE050's. From my 2 track day experiences they provide good grip and I had no problem with it. And I'd rather stick with runflats than going with regular tires w/o spare.

The only gripe I have is that I wish more tire makers would make runflats. As I discovered on tirerack, a ZSP 330i basically has no choice other than sticking with Potenza RE050's if we want runflat tires.

I have PS2 RFT on my 330i Sport, but their is also a Continental SPORT2 RFT in the 255/35/18 size too. The Continental is 15% cheaper than the others too.

The PS2 runflat is only $20 more than the regular PS2 here, so it's a no brainer.

Surely you can get these via an importers? Or are they not approved for US?

The major problem is what amounts to business corruption. The car manufacturer negotiates with the tire manufacturer, and many times 'exclusive' deals are made, providing huge profit margins for the tire manufacturer. Unique and new tire types are easy to do this with. The automobile press lackies cover up the mess.

Hello everyone,

For the people that consider (or have already purchased) non-RFTs and a spare in the trunk. Do the maths/physics of a possible collision with 60kmh and you will see that this tire will be like a rinoceros pushing through the back of your car. It will definately trash your back seats and come right through to your front seats. I've seen several experiments which tested things like grocery up to a profesional toolbox, and only the grocery was safe.

If you plan to mount the wheel in the trunk, do it in a way that it will never reach the back seats. For those that wonder what happens to the suitcases when we travel... most times they are placed in an wrong way. But a suitcase that heavy is usually larger than a wheel, or it could be a "sports bag" so it has a softer impact on things (elasticity).

If you stash suitcases in the trunk, try to do so without leaving gaps. What I mean is that if the car stops, whatever is in the trunk must stop along with the car and not maintain its momentum, because if it does, it will hit the back seats with a momentum the car has not any more (after the crash).

Some practical application:
If the car moves at 60km/h = 16.6m/s
And the wheel weighs 18kg
Then the momentum the wheel will have after the crash is p=16.6 * 18 = 300kg-m/s!

Considering that our wheels are heavier, think again about the spare in hte trunk!

I hit a bad pothole and damaged a rear tire on my car (has a bubble). Now I'm told the tire is on national back order. I can't believe this is still an issue after all this time.. It's almost August!!
