A 2WD (front or rear drive) with winters on will eat a 4wd with regular summers tyres on.

Did you read the EVO test where a Jag XFR on winters lapped Bedford over 25 seconds faster than an EVO-X with summer tyres!

Braking on snow from 60 on summers = nearly 800 feet FFS!
Braking on snow from 60 on winters = 330 feet..i.e. still less than the normal Highway code estimate at 70mph for dry weather.

A 4WD with summer tyres on (X5, RR, Cayenne etc) may be better at getting moving than a 2WD on summers, but for stopping (quite important) it's no better than a 2wd as we all have brakes on 4 wheels.

So you get your two ton SUV moving only to find you can't stop

I lived in Switzerland, no one had 4WD, they all drive (mostly mercs and bimmers) with winter tyres on. If the snow is too bad for 2wd+winters then its too bad to drive full stop. They'd just stay at home!
