I got a production number immediately upon placing a deposit. I ordered Dec 2 and my build date is supposed to be the last week in Jan or sooner. Delivery should be about 4-5 weeks after production (east coast) so basically the first week in March.

I wouldn't have given them money unless it was tied to an actual car!

I ordered Jan 3rd for a Feb production, car is promised to me end of march early april, my dealer is now selling March production!
Interesting, 10 bucks that the Oakville Dealer will not let it go and wishes to sell that vehicle there! This must be a preordered vehicle that must have fell through due to financing or the buyer simply didnt want the vehicle.

I haven't seen another e92 yet on PDX, but I know that there are a lot. They (Kuni) had 3 in the show room for delivery the day I picked up mine. Five months seems a bit long, but they are certainly selling like hotcakes.

As for production number, I received mine the day I ordered, but that is meaninglesss. The dealer gets an allotment and that's that. Mine was ordered in early October, but the dealer had already burned through his Oct allowannce and mine didn't actually get queued by BMW untill Nov. Dealer said that usually the allocation numbers are loose, but with the e92, they were sticking to the numbers.

If you want to be sure... make certain that your order is within the dealer's allotment for the month. I ordered simultaneously with another forum member, and his arrived 2+ weeks prior to mine due his being within his dealer's allocation.

That helps the current owners, and may also help resale down the road!

whats your production number, theres no reason the order sheet should indicate a date unless the dealer put it in

according to your number your car should start production very soon and be delivered mid feb to early march

We had one production number and build slot left for Feb for March delivery. It was to be built in the 9th week of the year, for delivery approx. 30 days later. The March allocations won't be out until the last week of January.Every car that is allocated to a Dealer has a production number assigned,we're able to modify that car to the customers specs. An ED car does not come out of our allocation unless it's very short notice. The ED office assigns the prod number when they confirm the order has been accepted.

wow, I'm so glad I ordered way back when, in August. My sister's BF just went to the dealer also, (after thinking his 03 maxima has a chance, long story but in short I gave him a taste of the twin pipes, next day he was at the dealership I ordered my car from) and my SA said april for the 335i coupe but next month for a 328 coupe. At 1st i thought he was blocking smoke up my ass, but upon reading this I'm shocked because last month the sedan sold more than the coupe, making me think the demand for the coupe wasn't as high but boy am I wrong. why did people wait so long to place their orders? even the initial demand wasn't this bad I think?

yea i think a lot more coupes would sell if they were as available as the sedan, my ca tried to get me to buy a sedan instead of the coupe, i wish they would use some of the engines they are putting in sedans and put them in coupes instead

I ordered my car in the beginning of the month, and it should get here in 12weeks. No later than the 2nd week of April. Hopefully, the dealership is correct. I haven't received a production number yet I'll call at the end of next week.

i wouldnt have put my order in unless i could get a number right away, and if i absolutly had to wait for one i would be calling every other day, dealers are shady and they might sell the production number you were in line for to someone demanding a number (like me) because they know you wont have the faintest idea that they did

No it's not-- that's YOUR car. No one else can claim it. Once you get your production number it ties you to a real vehicle... there no swapping going on unless your dealer calls you back in and says they can get you a car sooner with exactly the same spec, and it's your decision if you take it, but that's really really rare...

I would have to say from my experience, I don't agree. A production number is something with which you can bypass the dealership, and go right to BMW on the 800# to check status. And even before production starts, they will tell you it's a week 44 requested production but it looks like it started week 43, etc.

What is meaningless imho is putting a deposit down, and having the dealership tell you there isn't any production number. In such a case I believe you've given a deposit to get in line for a future allotment. Unless every dealership does that, imho you're prevented from shopping around, which I think is a bad buying strategy.

From what I'm reading here, it looks like it's taking an extra 4 weeks from when I ordered. So that's a 3 mo. wait, not 5. That's just what I'm reading, of course I'm not actually out there trying to order so I'm just going by what others are posting.

Are you saying you would purchase a number that is ahead of yours? I tend to think most people would not try to buy their way up the list, the car is not that hot. Dealers upset everyone in line by upgrading one person to the top. A more likely thing is a dealer will build the cars for people paying full price first, these cost plus 500 deals I keep reading about have very little incentive to keep on the top of the list.

Personally I don't think everything under the sun should be like eBay or NYSE. Why not turn buying a BMW into the ultimate driving game by selling futures on production numbers, derivatives, options....

I know that when you call the 800# with your prod. number, your name, address, etc. are all there. So I kind of find it hard to believe that you can have multiple car orders linked to your name nor would a dealership sell you a new order for cash....

Like you said, the car is not that hot, it's just backed-up. A hot car is one that sells for over list price and IS on the lot.

I didn't read that into techno's post at all.... As I understand it, the point is, your deposit entitles you to a production number and an est build date. If you don't like the timing of what they give you, you can try to press them for something sooner, but it's a longshot. Dealers love it when their cars are pre-sold. They should give you the next available car, and the prod No is evidence that it's yours and no one elses.

If you give them them money without getting a production number you might just be floating on a waiting list for all you know.

no thats not what i meant, i meen lets say a week before i ordered my car, another guy came in and ordered his car and put a deposite down, but the dealer didnt give him a production number and he didnt ask for one, fastfoward a week dealer doesnt have any production numbers, i come in and go to order my car but (like i did) tell them i wont be putting a deposit down without a production number (the first dealer i went to had none)

well the dealer thinks crap we dont have a production number but if we dont give him one hes going somewhere else, BUT WAUT there was that customer who we never gave the production number too, well his production number is now my production number and im getting my car sooner than him

this is hypothetical, but im saying this is what could happen if you order your car and put a deposit down without getting a number

I see where thats going, very possible. In my case I dont think I'll get burned that way. My sales person makes his money when I get my car, so if some other sales person wants to put another buyer in front of me I'd expect he will not appreciate it much. Not much I can do anyway, waits are much longer now then when I got my possition in line.

yea but if the same salesman encounters someone like me you better believe your ass is moving back in the line, especially since youll probably never know, he loses nothing from bumping you back but makes an extra sale from it

Your getting more and more remote in the possibility of anything happening, but you are correct it's possible. no argument on that.

I'll likely pull the plug on this car if it gets to be stupid long and wait for 2008 production or even M3. I like the car but BMW needs to step up production or they will cannibalize sales.
