Shame, I'm sure it was once a lovely forum.

I went on it for a bit, similarly enthusiastic about my 335d as Carlos was.

They really really didn't like it at all.

I see a pattern developing...

I've been a member for a year or so (about the same time as I have been here) and not encountered any problems at PH...

Don't talk shit and know the difference between their, there and they're and you'll be fine over there

So, no not a £1,000 an injector/pump. Oh and he (a mechanic) said all the modern HP/PD diesels are a nightmare and can all suffer from injector/pump issues, normally related to poor servicing/filter replacement. Have yet to see major issues on piezo, but then they are relatively new. And before someone gets on their high horse (and we all know who), that's the opinion of the person FIXING the cars!

Not sure they use piezo on 35d; didn't ask. They do on the 40d though.

Labour is extra of course and petrol HPI injectors are much cheaper (<£100) as are the pumps!
This matches my experience - note Bosch make injectors for loads of manufacturers, so costs/technology will be similar.

To repeat & add to post 16 a bit...

Injectors can be very expensive - but replacement is not the only option. BMW wanted about £600 to replace one I think (part was about £280).

On my last 330d I had them all refurbed after 1 went out of tolerance after 122k miles - cost about £80 each to refurb/clean/replace some specific parts (the nozzles) I think. This was possible as they are Bosch parts and I used a well known Bristol specialist who I can recommend.

Note I did put a cheap ECP fuel filter in at around 110k miles, which may (or may not) have contributed to the problem, the mech commented in this and replaced it - I will only use BMW parts now, the fuel filter is not much anyway so not worth skimping on.

It was still going strong when I sold it at 157k miles.

(the reason for doing all 6, and not just 1, was that a lot of the labour (£300) was to remove/replace manifold etc., so once in there I decided it was cost effective to do them all at the same time. They can be a sod to remove, so while DIY is feasible, I wouldn't recommend unless you're pretty handy with spanners).

That's one he mentioned off the top of his head! I will ask him how many BMW diesels he has done lately? That better?

The petrol / diesel debate is a bit tedious really. I have grown to love my diesel, it makes perfect sense for a road car, torque after all is everything.

The biggest problem I see with these cars are BMW's bizarre commitment to run flat tyres and especially extended oil change intervals. It pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with modern motoring, this dumbing down for the "average" motorist who can no longer even check their tyre pressures let alone find the dipstick.

I'm fortunate that I have a supply of the correct grade of oil at a cheap enough price so that I can drop the oil frequently, frequently enough so that hopefully my turbo wont end up coked up like we're seeing on so many higher mileage E46.

Giff - what intervals would you recommend? Just had my oil done but happy to get it done more often than needed.

As for the RFTs - yep they are bloody stupid but the car becomes a "proper" BMW once they gave gone. I reckon customers should start charging BMW for replacements though. IMO say 15k miles wearing out the RFTs is 15k miles partially wasted.

So atleast you admit swapping out RFTs is good it wouldn't have surprised me if having different tyres was an "all show no go" mod Not stealthy enough

ps. oil change. 15k at an absolute maximum...

335Diesel - personally 8k max, but if I had to pay BMW prices it might be longer..

MEGA - You are incorrect, changing to non rft is all go and no show.

Giff - cheers. I have a good supply of decent oil so might well do that.

Mega - yes indeed but I've also had mine disguised as moped crossplys...;-)

Not quite. He thinks all cars are crap and doesn't have a good word to say about any of them! They all break/have problems. But it keeps him in work I guess...

Huh? You still have to check your tyres, even if they're runflats?!? I find all mine tend to drop more (equally) than non runflats.

Mechanic I know (who's receiving a lot of post exposure lately!) does his every 6,000, but then it's easy and cheap for him to do. And he uses Syner Z.
