An aftermarket LSD cover with cooling vents is currently undergoing beta testing. It also has optional ports for oil cooler

All BMWs are developed by the ACCOUNTANTS. Sad, but true; BMW M is a GMBH. Regardless, we get great products.

I agree, all "m" means is a better starting platform, BASED on the same engines and body as the "non-m." I think a lot of you M owners like to pay for a badge. I can make a car just a fast and track ready for much less than an M costs. Read your post above. I have nothing else to say |

I hope so, and if not, hoping they at least put a real oil cooler in their to keep them stable on the track.

I agree with Defacto and Sniz. It shouldn't be called an M engine because it's really not developed by BMW Motorsport.
Unfortunately this seems to be the direction all new M engines are headed. Just tweaked ordinary BMW engines like the S52 was. Kinda lacks the exclusivity of real M developed engines. Otherwise I think the 1M has enough M developed stuff to be called an M. M cars aren't just about the engine. |

What's so hard for you folks to understand. The next generation m cars this time around , they found a motor worth putting a "m" tag to it because maybe BMW didn't realize the true potential of this motor and after a few years realize that this motor indeed is a winner. As for people saying this motor is not track ready like the other high revving M motors in the past, I find it interesting since there are a few here on this forum that track their cars and the N54 has performed very well

I agree. When I first saw the picture of the engine bay, I laughed when I saw the "Powered by BMW M" on the familiar N54 valve cover.

My N54 performs tremendously on the roadcourses...With full 400hp, it's easy to keep up with Z06's, E9x M3s, and x63 AMG's on straights. Braking and through the corners it's just as good as those cars as well--which can be attributed to a great platform, properly setup suspension, great tires and a competent driver. Oil temps are solid for 4-5 laps, or 10 minutes. When pounding 10+ laps in a 20-30 minute session, I usually put it down to Valet mode to keep oil temps in check.

you guys are hilarious
coming from a PCA and NASA instructor, myself, the car is only 50% of the battle. A qualified driver, lets say a professional, in a 330i zhp would lap 99% of the participants in this thread on a road course in their beloved 400hp heavy pig n54's. A modified 335 will be faster than a modified m3 on a straight away. Thats half the challenge. Turn in speed capability, slip angle, track out ease, weight balance, chassis rigidity - all that gives the favor to an m3. Its a superior platform, as it should be since more r&d goes into it. HP #s mean dick on most road courses. Faster cars SHOULD put down faster lap times, but faster cars require more experienced and superior drivers to achieve those lap times. Drivers are more important than the # your car dynos. the bottom line is that the 1M was a heavily requested car. People complained that BMW ex'ed out the M coupe and roadster, and there was the 128/135 but no sign of the 1M. BMW saw the demand and created the supply - after all they are in the business of making money. Its a shame that the motor was not built ground up - which usually had been the case for most M cars. but times are changing and people need to accept the fact that the e46 m3/ e36 m3/ e30 m3 are no longer what 99/100 M owners desire. They want luxury, high hp #s, fast 0-60 times, and could care less about nurburgring lap times or sub 3300 lb cars. If you desire diction like that, go to a company that will always add to their racing heritage - Porsche. Regardless of how many SUVs and ugly sedans they make, they will always have the ultimate sports car - the 911. And its like being a kid in a candy store when you choose Porsche.

As a matter of fact I ran the car last week after I got the 2nd oil cooler installed. I made 6 back to back pulls to 155. It probably took about 15 minutes of really hard driving. Ambient temps were like 40f so its not a true test until i hit the track on 90+ days. Oil temp never got over 240, I am interested in the coolant temps tho.

I'm going to throw in my 2 cents.
After all of the issues that I've had with this car, it's the funnest and fastest car I've ever owned. I have 88k miles on my car right now and am thinking of getting rid of it since the miles are getting higher and higher. At first, I was thinking of getting another 335i but after the horrible results of modifying the N55, getting another N54 is definitely another option. The issue that I find is getting such a small car. I'm still holding my breath for the e90 335is.
