Roads were so rough Wednesday night, I think it knocked my alignment out of wack. My steering wheel is slightly crooked now. I'm suprised my wheels aren't bent and tires don't have bubbles in them.

I was fortunate to have a 328i-cp loaner for the past couple days... Thank God I didnt have to drive mine through that mess. I followed a plow truck all the way up 15N.

99.9% cars on the road were not made for driving in those couple of perfect days. That left a few of us who have 4x4, xDrive or AWD stuck among those mortals. So go with thw flow, if there is one. Dont forget to vent afterwards here. 3hrs / 12 miles = walking

Why do people drive RWD sports cars in the winter, when they know its supposed to snow???!!?!?! I saw so many 335s (even 2 verts) M3s, 740s, 645/650s, 550s, E320s, E500s, CLS550s, an M5...a Z06, a 370Z, many G35s a Jaguar, SLK55..... Why would you drive a RWD car in the winter....regardless of what kind of tires you put on it.... I work in DC, live in Reston. It took me 8 hrs to get home. The traffic was a combination of things, stupid drivers, poor planning (VDOT), snow during rush hour preventing roads from getting treated but also people who for some odd reason think driving their RWD luxury cars in the snow is a smart idea... I realized after that storm that many people in the DC area have no understanding of driving in inclement weather or in the snow. You can't drive the same way in snow/sleet that you do on a summer street and I think that was another issue altogether. I saw so many SUV's attempt to pass cars stuck on toll booths on 267 only to plow into a snow bank trapping themselves b/c of their impatience. It's like 'You've already spend 7 hrs for a 30 minute commute and your almost home, why risk getting stuck just to pass a car thats trying to get through the toll booth?'.... This type of behavior was just shocking and made me wish I carried firearms under the seats and in the glove box... I have a C63 but I use my Integra as my commuter especially when I know were getting snow. I do occassionaly drive the C when its nice but cmon....if you can afford a 50k car, you should have a 2nd car in my opinion Last edited by pdjafari; 01-31-2011 at 02:12 PM.. |

However, a lot of the time, people find themselves in a situation where the $50K car is more than they can really afford and are unable to afford much more than that car, let alone a second car as a commuter.

Thats possible, but I mean I got my 01 Integra for $6,000!! If you can afford 50k, whats another 6k for a beater. It sucks getting into a beater when you have a nice car, I'll admit but I fell in love with my car last week. The damn thing got me home in one piece

I'll add one other thing, i truly felt like I was inside of a bad horror/action thriller movie. Like 2012 or the Day after tomorrow. Cars are stranded, people are all outside wondering whats happening, mass confusion. Occassionaly when you see the crazy guy in the Truck w/ duelies try to swerve around you at 55mph on an icey road lose control....tree's down in the middle of 66....
When you think of those movies you think 'wow the director/producer sure do exaggerate things'....but when I think back to last week and spending 5 hours on 66W, i realize that it would be reality if in fact the world was coming to an end. Fist fights on the highways lol |

I agree that it was poor planning on pretty much every driver's part. They had forecasted heavy afternoon snow for days, yet people still went into work and left at normal times. My job allows me to take off whenever I need to as long as I have leave, but even if it didn't, I'm not risking getting stuck in some major weather event just because of work. Sorry. People should have left earlier than they did, but I think it also started snowing a bit earlier than predicted. Add the rain that washed the salt off the roads and it was a 'perfect storm' type situation. I bet you next time they predict weather like that, people will stay home.
Sucked for me because I was sitting in a ton of traffic trying to get into DC to see a friend. I was getting around in the Jeep with absolutely no problems, even in 2wd most of the way. I wanted to go out and help pull out stuck people, but the roads were so jam packed, I wouldn't have gotten anywhere. Oh, and as for the quattro argument... Is it really this bad? |

and with th right tires, AND clearing the roads, rear wheel drive is pretty safe. i have been living here since mid 2004, and i have never seen such a total mess with traffic. you know why? cuz nothing was done beforehand, or even during the storm. usually you see the salt trucks before a major storm, and ploughs during the storm. i don't know if it was lack of budget (most states have used up their snow removal budgets already), lack of care or what. but the roads were 100% untreated. I saw an Audi Q7, BMW X5, BMW 535xi, Ford Escape, a few Audi quattros all stuck. so this had nothing to do with front/rear/4wd. if you live in reston, i am sure you know the intersection of Wiehle and Sunset hills, that was a total mess. but by then it was too late with a storm of that magnitute, we should have stayed home. but because the government cares more about its wallet, than the safety of its citizens, they only gave us 2 hours early, which obviously, was not enough |

and for a car that you will use less than 7 days a year. as long as the roads are treated, rwd is perfectly safe |
