I think its fine but there are better oil around the same price range. I go for Walmart special 5 qt jugs. I like penzoil ultra syn or Quaker state ultimate durability syn which is cheaper Penzoil owns Quaker state. So I think the formulations Are very similar. |

I asked a tribologist about T6 for BMWs and he said it was a very good oil and preferred it over the factory recommended Castrol at the time (which he did not speak very highly of). |

Running T6 since 2009/2010
Personal vehicles: -e36 325i with 190k - totaled in 2012 -e46 323i with 230k - sold in 2016 -e90 335i with 80k - owned since 2013 - about 50k on T6 -VW 2.0t with 130k - owned since 2007 - about 70k on T6 For the purpose of the thread: I will consider other BMW "approved" oil only if it's in the same price range as T6 or given to me for free. |

I just switched to SHELL ROTELLA T6 5W-40 after running CASTROL SYNTEC EF 0W-40 for 6000 miles. As soon as i started up the car i noticed a drastic improvement in idle smoothness, and smoother sounding exhaust. the castrol syntec looked all soupy and dark coming out. This is a diesel truck oil that's tough as hell and has a stiff detergent package to keep engines clean. I heard people getting good results with this oil in nearly anything it's put in and at 20 bucks a gallon you can't lose.
plus this is one of the few oils that explicitly advertise a high temp duty specification on the label, so i don't have to mind the temp during those spirited moments when my oil is around 260-70. |

Kicking up an old thread.....anyone else use Rotella 5w-40 in their N54 powered car? I run it in my diesel truck, ATVs, and bikes,....and all of my Blackstone reports come back great.
Thinking about running it in my 335i. It's easy to find, fully synthetic, and 5w-40.......any issues with running it in an N54? |

I personally don't know why people believe that "my oil" is better than what BMW recommends. T6 is an ACEA E3 truck oil. But it matches ACEA A3/B3-4 so why not? |

Yeah, definitely not going 15k miles between changes. I figure 5k intervals is more than good.....right?

There's discussion on T6 in the diesel sub-forum, as it's a low-saps alternative that many diesel guys have used. The E90 diesel sub-forum has even more discussion of it. |

Most of the posts here are three years old, with a few recent additions. But I'll post a comment anyway.
I'm very familiar with the Rotella oils and have used them extensively in my motorcycles. In my case I've used the T4, long before it had the JASO MA cert for motorcycles, but the latest addition of the JASO MA cert makes me feel even better now! These diesel oils (Rotella) typically have a lot of zinc, which can allegedly damage catalytic converters. In my case where my car consumes a lot of oil, I don't want to take that risk so I've avoided it. However not too long ago Shell released a "Rotella Gas Truck Full Synthetic" which is cheap, around $22 for 5 quarts, similar to the Rotella T6. It's marketed toward trucks and SUVs, but there's nothing magical about oil that makes it different for a truck or car, so I decided to try it in my N52. So far so good. There are rumors that this is very similar to Pennzoil Platinum (another excellent oil, also made by Shell) if not identical, however it's not clear why Shell is marketing it as a truck oil. All I know for sure is that it's a few bucks cheaper and I'm pretty confident it's a quality oil. |

I've been running Rotella T6 for a while....works great! I've been doing some research....and it sounds like Chevron Delo 400 5w-40 Synthetic might be a better oil......anyone tried it in their N54? I've ran it in my diesel truck for the last few years and the oil reports from Blackstone come back looks fantastic! It's about the same price as the T6.

Been using T6 for years. It's popular in the high-HP modded cars (GTR's, 4G63's, Subaru's, N54's, Honda K's, etc) for a reason.
My oil temps were lower (by 10-15F) w/ T6 in my N54's over anything else, in Arizona, in summer, w/ no oil cooler. |

you can use the correct oil for not much more. the high zinc is not worth the trade off since these run much hotter than diesel
