I didnt install bmw standard tools. I only installed the inpa software. I didnt continue because i will be fine with just the inpa software because all i want is to read/delete codes.

Did you get the correct driver installed for your cable. These use a FTDI USB to Serial chip, and you usually point to the CD location (or Folder with the Driver files) before you update the COM port on the device manager.
Choose only one specific USB port on your laptop and dont change that when hooking up to the cars OBD port.

I am going to install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 update and try to get the cable to work again.

Alright, it looks like i am getting somewhere. After I did the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 update, I tried it again.

Now when I plug it into the car, the battery dot turns black. Then when I turn on the ignition, the dot turn black as well. So there is def. comunication from the car to the computer.

But then I hit shift-F8 to select something from the e89 menu. Once I do, I am getting a "error compliling script file" error and goes back the the main menu. Any idea what i did wrong ?

If your not connected to the car, the Battery and Ignition circles will not be solid black.

Don't forget to copy the INPA 5.0.2 CFGDAT and SGDAT folders to removable media for safe keeping and make sure that you reinstall Windows prior to installing BMW Standard Tools 2.12 which contains INPA 5.0.6...

If you decide not to reinstall Windows 7, I suggest completely uninstalling INPA 5.0.2 and friends prior to installing BMW Standard Tools 2.12.

However, when I plug in my cable. My computer reads it and installs it on it own unlike your DIY. I get USB Serial Port (COM3)ready but the USB Serial Converter does not show up.

No idea.

I've tried to help as much as I can, but your not following the DIY.

INPA 5.0.2 and friends are not totally compatible with the latest SP Daten files as stated in the DIY. INPA 5.0.2 was only used to collect files needed to bootstrap INPA 5.0.6 which is a component of BMW Standard Tools 2.12.
That being said, diagnosis of INPA 5.0.2 issues is outside the scope of this DIY.

This DIY should work, I haven't tested injector coding. Please post if it works for you.

I uploaded the file re-compressed with 7zip (INPA-EDIABAS full English Edition) here: http://cl.ly/TbpS, should be a faster download. I also created a torrent: http://cl.ly/1x3F3z242d41 which should be faster still.

It is the exact same from the link above so however old that is, I have made no changes other than re-compressing. I just re-uploaded because it took me forever to download from that source.

Well THANK YOU.

Been downloading from the original link for a few hours now at a measly 25KB/s. This torrent should speed me up a bit.

Hopefully people are seeding. Once I get it i'll seed for a bit.

Exclamation Update

Once BMW Standard Tools 2.12 is installed, Rheingold ISTA 3 can leverage EDIABAS 7.3.0 to communicate with your car via the K+DCAN cable.

Interestingly enough, Rheingold generically refers to the MSD81 as a MSD80 just like INPA.

Rheingold ISTA 3.41.10 can be found in this post:

Thanks for a great DIY! I am a little confused about the last step though and Im sure Im just really over looking something.
Copy the NCS Expert profiles to the C:\NCSEXPER\PFL folder.

Example:

Code:
copy *.PFL C:\NCSEXPER\PFL /v

Where are the .pfl files to copy into the NCEXPER/PFL folder? Thanks again.

Thanks for posting the download link! Once I have an opportunity to verify the download contents, I'll update the original post.

Thanks, glad you found it useful!

The links to BMW Standard Tools 2.12 and the NCS Expert profiles were posted much earlier in the DIY. They can be found in this post:

So what is BMW Standard Tools, anyway? Just an installer pack someone built that installs INPA, NCSexpert, etc. for you?

It's the latest release of INPA, NCS Expert, etc. from BMW.

It's not an official installer from BMW though, is it? I did some research and it appears to be put together just by a user. I thought it was curious how the installer is polished and in English while the actual tools are mostly German and are very clearly legacy software that has been incrementally updated with time.

Any major changes if going with XP instead of 7, particularly in terms of the configuration of the COM ports and latency, or is it the same?

Also, rather than doing one OS install just for the sake of grabbing some config files out of INPA 5.02, does anyone have those hosted so one could just pull them down and drop them in to 5.06?

I can't say as the DIY was tested with Windows 7. Another forum member posted to this thread saying that no changes were required for XP SP3.

Gotcha. I'll try taking a stab at it and see how it goes. The laptop I'll be using is pretty old and these applications were all first built long before Windows 7 was around, so I figure I'll try just using XP.

When using Windows 7, did you need to run any of the applications under XP compatibility mode? I've heard others mention it, but didn't see it in the guide.
