"Unfortunately reliability at this stage of the game is mostly uncharted territory. Not many 335s with more than 100k miles on them yet, nor much racing experience. A few engines have blown, and some of these incidents have been linked to mods. But there have been extenuating circumstances, and some un-modded engines have also blown, albeit at a very low rate, suggesting that overall the N54 is a great engine (HPFP and overheating while extreme racing the notable Achilles heel for some).

Regardless, there seems little point to dragging out the verbal swords over this. The turbo modding community has been doing this stuff for quite awhile, and some outfits like Vishnu & AA seem to have a depth of experience and long term reputations at stake. They are clearly motivated to bring a quality product to market, with reliability a high priority."

It's outrageous that an exhaust can be the culprit. It's true that by replacing the restricted OEM exhaust with a free flowing one, you are increasing the flow thus increasing boost by a PSI or two...IMO it's the same effect as when you drive on colder nights in a stock 335i. If this were the case (exhaust is the issue), a good portion of this board would have broken down 335's.

A spike would be a more believable story, but it would have to actually HOLD. I've spiked many many times in my old Evo due to kinks in the line, boosting around 28-29 PSI when I should only be at 21 PSI, but I immediate let off the gas before any damage can be done....when modding a F/I'd car, a boost gauge is definitely needed.

Shiv's theory is also believable since it happened RIGHT after that user installed his CAI and WOT it.

alrite fellas, this may seem like a basic math question but. . . .

in a 15 gallon gas tank, how many gallons 100 octane fuel would you need to mix with 91 octane fuel to create a 92-93octane fuel?

exactly, because remember, it suddenly failed, not gradually

I'm now curious to see how much I'm boosting with the catback. I want to slap on a nice Defi BF boost gauge, but I don't want to spend any more money on the car, lol.

I used the Procede Reader software's real time PSI guage and never hit over 14.4. . . . so I dunno. But I dont think that guage is perfectly accurate.

Yes, that's why both of those theories are believable in my eyes. I've seen many turbos and engines go out...all of them were due to...modding without knowing WTF they were doing or in some cases, they were just pushing too much HP for the stock internal.

If the exhaust was the culprit, it would slowly mess up the turbo(s), but not immediately. But when you have a packing peanut shooting up into the turbine, it's going to get messed up instantly. Same goes with spiking if you hold it long enough.

I don't think it's accurate much, probably a little bit better than boost readings from turbo timers, lol. You have to T in the vacuum line to really get the precise reading.
