I "floated" home.... weird carlos cuz my car felt like the back end was on ice skates all night too... I'm tellin you its probably the cold. under 45 degrees really stiffens up the rubber on summer tires so you don't get as much traction as you'd think.

All this summer/winter tire talk has me thinking this may be my next set. While I love the PS2s, I could rock these all year round and ditch the winter setup. They are speed rated identically yet the A/S has a 45,000mi warranty. With AWD I think I could handle 90% of the worse winter has to offer with the A/S. Thoughts?

Anyone interested in the wheel and tiresets in my sig? Paul?

I agree that you should be ok with GOOD all-season tires as long as you're really careful when driving in snow and ice. All-seasons with AWD isn't a horrible idea like a lot of people paint it out to be; most of the gripes with all-seasons is that people who use them think they're golden, which they aren't. Biggest issue is misjudgement of braking distance.

EDIT:
I would still feel better with a winter set and summer set, as you're not compromising during either period. With all-seasons, you are compromising year-round.

I'll tell you guys though... U don't buy winter tires for startup in snow, it's more for handling but mostly for stopping. Xi's will bulldoze through the tuff stuff and handle well in deep snow for the most part but when it comes to stopping you'll want some good winter rubber underneath. I'll take rwd with winters over awd with a/s any day. Winter rubber is designed to be softer compound so it sticks in sub 40 degree weather... All seasons are only effective to about 30 degrees until becoming as useless as summer tires

I'd agree Id would rather have winters but in johns case a/s are ok if your careful. but a/s are still better than summer under 30 degrees cause of the tread. I got stuck on a qtr inch ice mound in a parking spot cause the thread was packed with snow. I kept the car in reverse and got out to see the tire just spinning in place. I pretty much knew I need winters after that.

Im just spitballin here anyways. My PS2s are new and will last until my next car. Speaking of which, Ive been mulling the idea of trading the 335 for a couple year old Elise and a beater TJ for the winter.

I miss trackdays.

Tread has nothing to do with it guys... I'm talking about the rubber stiffining up when it gets colder than 45 deg for summers and a/s under 30. You can start up just fine as long as you have good tread but you won't stop for shit cuz the rubber is too hard.

Hmmm 45 degrees seems a bit conservative....from Tirerack...

Good info here...and using E90s to boot.

Exactly! I really don't understand why people don't get winter tires. It is totally worth it. You guys drive expensive cars, drop the money on a set of winters. I am a huge fan of having winter tires. I really think they make all the difference in the world. In the end, it probably doen not cost much more anyway because you are changing the tires out so your summer ones will last longer. Just my .02

It's probably that those people don't want to go through that extra effort of buying and changing them out every season. After getting winters last season, I'm glad I got them.

After switching from winter to summer tires (and vice versa), you appreciate each set for their own capabilities.
