You both seem like very nice, genuine people and it is obvious that you both care about each other. Don't let other peoples comments affect your relationship (i.e. just ignore it). If you let external factors affect your personal lives, then neither of you will be in control of your relationship, and that's dangerous. You should just ignore everyone else and try to laugh it off....

If both people in the relationship are confident, nobody can affect it. Also, if they're confident in each other, they won't try to control/limit the other person. In a good relationship, they guy completes the girl, and the girl completes the guy (i.e. brings to the table something that the other person is lacking). Nowadays, we see too many relationships where people try to limit each other and hold each other back from living their life happily.
