Not much happening these days
- Added a BMS charge pipe to the shopping cart on the BMS site, put in my details, then backed out after seeing the shipping price for about the 20th time in the past few years - Updated maps from 2009 to 2017. My son was starting to ask why we're driving on grass according to the map! - Started playing with transmission flash files. There is a lot to learn and quite vague documentation. A transmission flash is not something to use a trial-and-error approach at modifying. I'll flash the stock TCU flash with WinKFP to the car soon so I can read it out with xHP, then I can compare the differences between the stock and Alpina flashes. I'll probably start with copying all of the stock D mode shift point maps to the Alpina file then flash that and wait until more info comes about. Alpina S/M modes with stock D mode will do me fine for the time being. Last edited by bradsm87; 03-01-2017 at 05:34 AM.. |

MMM335 flashed my dct with some new software, it was certainly a bit of fun but most of the issues seemed to be with establishing a connection. It went well, flashed the 135IS software and finally got a working launch control.

I'm familiar with flashing BMW files with WinKFP. The new thing for 6AT that's out now is xHP Flashtool to flash custom transmission tunes. I'm starting to learn the process of developing custom TCU tunes.

Well I finally bit the bullet today and ordered the most overpriced piece of kit on the N54 platform, a $430 piece of aluminium pipe, a BMS charge pipe.
I'll probably run a little more boost after it's in, but not much and I'll probably taper it a little near redline to keep turbo shaft speed down and to not run in to limitations of the AMS intercooler which isn't the biggest. Longevity and reliability is my number one priority. A dyno run will definitely come shortly after. |

The main issue stopping me from running more boost is extra stress on the turbos and possible PCV issues from the extra blow-by. I just want a daily that I never have to touch. I look around at all the smoke and/or turbo issues on this platform and worry a lot. |

Well I've fallen victim to the known MFactory LSD bolts falling out issue which have also damaged the rest of the diff. It started with the car very intermittently not moving in reverse (a few weeks ago) to now the diff constantly whines loudly.
What happens next with the LSD manufacturer will dictate whether this story and pictures get shared throughout various public forums. It's such bad timing because I've got a new TCU flash that I so badly want to try! |

Was your diff amongst the types with the potential faulty bolts? I guess if I had installed one I would be reluctant to pay all the labour again for R&R'ing |

Yes mine is one with the faulty bolts. Yeah I'm furious to tell the truth and they're pulling the old "we're only liable for the LSD" card even though a faulty part from the LSD wrecked other parts. We're just looking for a car for the wife to borrow at the moment and I'll pull it out and post pics (everywhere) and a "buyer recommendation".

Well here is the result of taking the advice of the Australian MFactory dealer not to worry about the bolt recall. How MFactory handle my case from here will determine whether these pics just stay on just this thread or find their way, along with my full story to many forums and facebook groups with some buying advice Fingers crossed it all works out OK. I've already been generous by not charging them labour for removal and re-installation or the diff oil cost. That's where I expect my out-of-pockets to end.
On the plus side, I'm working away on a new TCU flash and have another guy doing some testing and further changes to it. I've also got a DME flash with way better accelerator pedal mapping now that I don't have to make the pedal mapping boring to make Alpina D shift points better. By the time the diff is back in, I should have a pretty awesome TCU flash to run straight away! |

Luckily, the ring and pinion look really good after very close inspection. There are scuffs around the outside but nothing on the face. Luckily the ring and pinion metal hardness seems to be much harder than the bolts.

That sucks to hear about your diff Brad! Hopefully it'll be back on the road soon.
interesting to see how your own TCU map goes! Would you be willing to offer your custom flashing as a service? Would be keen on one for my car |

So whats the next plan of action? Remove diff from car? Or just replace bolts in situ? So many metal particles you'd need to either flush out the LSD or put a new mfactory unit in if its damaged.

It has a slight whine due to the metal pieces in the oil going through the bearings. I am insisting that MFactory take responsibility and pay for both directions of freight and the parts/repair (full disassemble and clean, replace all bearings, check all tolerances at minimum) at their dealer in QLD. I only just sent the email just then. In the last email, they say their liability ends with the LSD only but that's BS so we'll see how it goes. |
