Yeah, ISPs are not inclined to go out of their way for their more technically adept clients. Verizon will sell you a static IP for a whopping one-time fee of $500. If I had Verizon service here, other than Verizon Wireless (like maybe FIOS or whatever), it'd be worth the fee over the course of years to have a stable, static IP. But alas, no fee will buy me a static IP from Mediacom. I'm ok with dynamic DNS, but I can see where needing multiple IPs would be a frustrating situation.
