Why do people keep on blaming the DSC system 'messing up' their maneuver in an emergency? The DSC system will not kick in if you are not at the verge of losing stability of the car. It's there to help stabilize the car. When you felt DSC coming on, that's when it's doing the right thing. When you say you were cornering fine just before it kicked in, it's because you are was still stable. When you are not stable anymore, the system kicks in. Now you blame it for intruding you. Ever imagine how much more unstable your car would be or you would have already crashed if you really did turned off the entire system and the DSC system did not react accordingly?

But in the end, I appreciate it's capabilities after nearly totalling my first car and crashing into a median.

I believe it's 50 MPH. It's kind of useful when you want to do something in the rain/snow that's a little risky and you want the capability of what is in effect a computerized LSD but you also want DSC to save your ass if you go too far. I also managed with DTC to go up and down an ice rink of a driveway several times. The difference was amazing.

![]() Just be glad that we can turn it off easily in 2 stages if we wanted to, because the IS250/350 drivers have to do a complicated dance with the gas/brakes/handbrake in order to deactivate their VDM. ![]()

It may have taken like 2 minutes to go 20 feet, but I was able to get into my garage!

March 2005. We had 50cms of snow in about 3hours time. My car was standing at the parking lot(E87 120d at that time waiting on the E90 330), stuck. I switched DTC/DSC off completely, because I wouldn't get far with the system on: Far means 0 centimetres. Even with the stuff turned off I managed to reach the exit of the parking lot, about 40 metres, in about 5 minutes or more.... THAT's RWD as well...(no wintertyres)
The M3 E46 in winterconditions with it's limited slip diff had a bit more traction from standstill in the snow(all systems off, look above why), but I had to take care of the other traffic around me swinging the M3's tail out(looks very sexy) from one side to another(which is normal in those conditions with a limited slip diff). RWD has it's disadvantages too...

Yes, the DSC does great in the snow. Try turning it off when it snows, the stability of the car is totally different. You have to try to get the car to go out of control with the DSC on. It stops you before you do anything stupid.

I see many good point and opinions in this thread – that great.
My point is that we (almost) all adults should be entitled to make OUR chooses and “mistakes”. I only wish that the “Ultimate Car” designer will give us an option to set our personal defaults. I love the DTC/DSC in the rain and snow (not much of it in Socal or FL) but on the %99 of the sunny days I don’t need this option on all the time ……(and I’m not mean ABS) I know that last time that I posted this opinion I was killed by “experts” same way as our SheerSpeed – the young racer, but I will give my 2 cent anyway. PS: Let be careful on public roads during holidays, it not always all under our control. |
