So upon further investigation of my wheel situation, I think I have a hypothesis why this happened. Like I said, I painted and clearcoated a sample piece and the match was identical. What I did not do to the sample piece was prime it. If you notice in my earlier pics, the primer I used was a greenish mustard color. This is the same hinge that the wheels look off by, and the hinge is local to the areas I primed. I think the primer I used was no good. It’s etching characteristics probably are good, but I think this is the reason the color is off. I think if I had a primer that was flat aluminum colored like what is on the wheels, or maybe not even use a primer, the wheels will come out like they should..
It must have etched it’s way through the paint or something. The day I finished this job, the match was exact, and is shown in the pictures.. It definitely came through the paint.. So I guess the 161’s will come back off, and I will sand these areas down to bare aluminum and go from there.. This is all making a lot more sense, because like I said, the color match was perfect. I’m anxious to get these reworked now.. Maybe I will take them off the car tonight..

I used this DupliColor today and to me it does not match. I first used a grey primer like I had seen others use in wheel repair threads on here and other sites. That DupliColor to me clearly is darker than the BMW wheel color and seems to have more metallic sparkle to it.

I'm going to do my 162s tomorrow. Probably will sand, Bondo, prime and paint tomorrow, let it dry overnight, then clear on Sunday. I'll take pictures.
This is the first weekend that has been nice enough to paint outside. shim gave me his Wurth paint, which was still wrapped in plastic, unused. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is not one of the defective cans. If it is, supposedly the Wurth will get back on the shelves mid-next month, and I'll just wait another few weeks. But geez, I'm getting sick of running winter tires. FWIW, the more I've read about Wurth and 1Z, neither are a "perfect" match to the BMW paint. The metal flakes aren't quite exact, but close enough. So don't feel too bad about the Dupli-Color.

i agree the pedals make a big difference, i just got mine this monday...the only part i hated about the install was the brake pedal........but everything else went smoothly...the only thing i'm kinda sad about though is that its not that visible unless you look at the pedals...
here's mine though, sorry for crapy quailty, done with phone which the batt die in like a few seconds so it was a real quick snap

Nice..
From the rest of the car they're visible. It'd be cool to have a amber LED downfiring on them at night to light those puppies up though, I've had this in the back of my head for a while now.. Your passengers will notice them. It adds so much to the interior, I can't believe it..

Re-tackling this problem in an hour or so. I'll let you know how it comes out. I'm positive without that *#*#*$ primer it will be a perfect match.. And if not, it will look pretty damn close until the wurth comes out. But I have a pretty good feeling it was the primer that messed it up..

Hey guys, waiting for my Bondo to cure right now (should be another 15 min or so). First time with Bondo, and it's harder to work with than I expected. In today's warm temps, it obviously gets hard faster than the 5 minutes it says on the instructions. It was pretty hard within about 30 seconds to a minute. My first try messed up, and I scraped it off and tried again. Here's hoping this time it worked. I had some pretty deep gouges on one of the rims. If the Bondo breaks apart in pieces when I'm sanding or something, I'll go for a third try.
I've been taking it slow today, and probably will sand down the Bondo, prime and paint today, but not add the clear until tomorrow. I'll let you know how the Wurth works out.

Josh, just saw this thread. Nice job. It's the primer, I had the same thing happen to me once. I'd bet money on it. Oh; I use Einszett Silber Spray, but it's virtually identical to Wurth.

Bummer. The Wurth paint I have is defective. I guess that's why it was recalled. I can't believe I was not smart enough to try it prior to starting this whole process.
I shook the hell out of the can before using it, knowing that the product was recalled because the nozzles were prone to clog. But it didn't help -- it would spray a tiny bit, then immediately clog. When I say a tiny bit, I mean a couple of drops. Then nothing. Not even a aerosol sound. I shook it upside down, tried painting at a 90 deg angle, held a rag soaked with paint thinner at the nozzle, stuck a safety pin in the nozzle hole to make it bigger... tried everything. A couple of times, I got a continuous spray for like a second or two before it stopped, and what paint did go down looks like a perfect match. But I spent like an hour, very frustrating, and did more harm than good to the wheels because most of the time, just drops of paint dribbled out onto the tires, leaving dark splatters. Now I can't even get anything at all to come out. I give up. Ugh. Now I guess the tires will go back in the shed and I will wait for the Wurth to come back with a functioning nozzle.

I bought a just off from white primer today. My results so far are very good. The silver is matching very good this time. I am going to let it dry a long time, do one last money coast of silver, then start the clear.. I'll post pics when I'm done..

Aluminum Pedal Install (by CC 330i) Get yourself some good cobalt bits for drilling through the steel.. I also used a drop of glue on the self tapping screws so they don't back out of the plastic.. Good luck..

On ebay for 127 + 10 shipping. Tell the guy whether you have automatic or manual... (That's for the pedals and dead pedal)
