At the time I moved here from Milwaukee, I believe I only had to pay a plate transfer fee (assuming you already paid sales tax when registering in WI).

youll most likely pay state sales tax which is 6% I believe, unlike if you bought the car downtown in chicago. this im not positive about

but ultimately, youre not better off going to another state to purchase a vehicle and bring it back unless you wait X number of years until the sales tax difference has depreciated @ 2% a month to nill

when i bought my car in missouri they didn't charge me sales tax. i had to pay sales tax in illinois.

+1. I didn't pay any sales tax in WI until I registered my car here. Had a nice cushion of 30 (?) days with the temp tags.

wait so if its 6% all I have to do is wait 3 months to do it in IL and it'll be 0? I'm so confused. Or did you mean .2%?

just so we are clear, I am a full Wisconsin resident right now and my car is registered in WI also. I'd be moving back to Chicago sometime over the summer but technically my apartment lease isn't up till August 15th 2010 so I'd still be paying rent till then. If I buy the car here in WI June 1st and wait till Sept 1st to switch over to IL I wouldn't pay tax?

Don't think you will be happy with it for a DD. Will have to purchase that Jeep you were talking about for a primary vehicle. M3 will suit better for something you can drive all the time.
