Install question. Should the aft ward mount ear of MAF be pushed through the seal or no? It seams that the MAF connector will have a better chance seating properly if the mount ear is on through the CAI box. But the seal is not closed up well around the MAF then.

Perhaps I will seat the MAF connector and then push ear back inside. 3rd picture in part 4 of instructions is a little hazy here. thanks

Last pic in that section shows exactly what it should look like when it is pushed through.

I've got the connector on the outside of the air box. I rotated the MAF and pushed the rubber around a bit to try to seal it better.

Install is complete. I fust'd around with the 90 deg elbow duct and as well as the MAF angle in there. Going for a test drive here in a bit after tool cleanup

I am not the you tube type of guy. I could hear the turbo a little more but not a night and day type of sound difference. I only took a few shots after all the work was completed. Iaknown's pictures depict what I experienced in the install. It was a little bit of a trick to get everything lined up and I did have to squish the 90 deg corrugated duct a little to push the box down against the frame rail mount. I had to adjust the lower hose clamp on the 90 deg duct to allow for a slight tilt of the duct.

I cranked down the passenger side mount a bit too early. To attach the close out lid and align the 5 holes, I had to loosen the passenger box mount screw to get some wiggle room for the transparent lid. I went easy on those 5 screws as he warns that you could crack the plastic lid if you over tighten those screws. He used torx head screws for the lid which I thought was a cool touch.

Another custom touch is the clear lid is molded with an angle in it. The long angular feature on it looks like there is a big gap in the pictures. That straight line is actually the line of the bevel of the lid. The edge does nearly go out all the way to the body work. I will try to note this in the pictures.

The main stainless housing is bent, not welded. The upper lip is welded on a few places. this lip is where the transparent lid bolts to.

The OEM parts that go on the shelf are the upper and lower airbox, 2 screws that attach the MAF sensor to the upper box, one screw that attaches the lower air box to the front mount, and the little rubber foot that cushioned the lower box from the frame rail.

Thanks for the positive feedback and extra details

I noticed you said there was not a huge sound difference. Could be partly because of the short drive but another reason could be that I have a carbon hood and that what I've been basing my findings off of. I'm sure the stock metal hood acts as a better sound insulator than my hood...

@BB_cuda - any noticeable gain or reduction from the test drive 'butt dyno'?

Maybe it's because I've put the engine cover back on for the winter. On a side note, if I still had the straight open down pipe on, I wouldn't hear anything but the exhaust. Am I supposed to be hearing a whoooosssshhhh sound?

No noticeable difference in butt dyno. With a turbo charged car, even if air is breathed in more easily, the turbo just wouldn't quite turn their screws as hard.

Have you posted details on this mod? I'd be interested in hearing more :-)

I don't plan to do a dyno. This mod was a last minute thing and came available in the middle of another costly mod (Wavetrac LSD).

I'm confused though. Didn't you buy this too?

I noticed a crazy difference in turbo noises heard. In fact, I'm actually rather horrified at the amount of surge and barking I'm hearing now that was hidden before. It legitimately needs one of turbosmart's diesel bov kits (or a borg Warner EFR with their built in bov and turbosmart's controller ).

borg Warner EFR? Im assuming something different from turbosmarts bov with controller? I saw bpc is selling the TS bov but always wondered how to wire up the inputs to the controller.

+1.......Was going to chime in and add that in addition to more turbo whistle a lot of the sound effects are when you let off the throttle!

I think it was the short drive and bumpy road. Went to church today and heard more sucking noise while accelerating but for sure hear when I let off the pedal. It sounds like a pressure bleed off noise when backing off.

Nope, but one better, with detailed pics! Thank you for posting. I'd be curious if you see any change in MPG as well. I just replaced my filter with a Mahle, so curious if the cone changes anything.

Off topic: While I still wish mods here would sticky some posts, I do like the appreciate button! Hint, hint folks

Here's a nice video demonstrating the sound well

Basically, when the turbo(s) get big enough on a diesel, you run into the effect where letting off at high boost creates a condition were the turbo is trying to force more air into the engine than what it can swallow immediately after removing the load on the engine. So the air ends up going backwards through the turbo. It's obviously very detrimental to the life of a turbo and should be avoided. Normally on a stock-ish diesel, the turbo will decelerate fast enough that this condition doesn't happen. But when the turbo rpm's and/or wheel sizes are pushed well beyond stock, the increased inertia will slow the deceleration of the turbo causing the barking behavior.

To combat this, TurboSmart makes a controller that ties into the tps sensor and will trigger a blow off valve to operate when you lift off the throttle pedal. This gives a path for the air to go that would otherwise try and go backwards past the compressor.
