They are steel. Aluminium rods normally only used in short distance high RPM competition vehicles since they fatigue and must be replaced periodically. I think I've read about a new Audi or some other car using ALU-rods.

I have an August 2006 build and made 660+rwhp on the STOCK bottom end. Sorry, but cast pistons wouldn't do that.

Again, I paid someone to LOOK at the motor and inspect it, clean valves, etc. I even authorized them to BUILD pistons if need be. Guess what? If I needed them, they would have told me. And you know what? They showed me the DISH on the piston and various markings (over a year ago) to show me that it was forged.

So the buiold went on, and now I am happy.

But listen, all Mahle is doing is looking up a part number. Enrita blew is motor and had it disassembled. Guess what? His shop also confirmed it was forged. There isnt a consipiracy here. If there was such a desire to have cast pistons, like there is LSD, there would have already been them pushed more on the market.

Did you note the piston's code/markings by any chance ? It would be really useful.

Once again, 06/2007 build. What do u guys think? I would hope I have firged but id there any way of knowing by the build date without actually opening up my engine because acvkrding to an earlier post they stopped making them forged the month after mine was built, so its pretty closr to the limit...who knows?

Does it matter? Are you planning on making monster power soon or something?

If you are in the 2% of people on this forum making big HP then maybe worry about it.

I would worry, cast iron pistons have not been used since around WW1 . The pistons are always aluminium, cast or forged.

What's not clear:

1) Starting with Dec 2009 N54 pistons, are these still forged or cast?

Mahle isn't clear and "very possibly" referred to late model N54s (Dec 2009+)...

There is "no doubt" N54 pistons BEFORE Dec 2009 are forged as this has been confirmed multiple times...

So are saying the pistons are forged because they had a dish? That has nothing to do with if its forged or not. A forged piston can be dished, flat top or have a dome. You may or may not be able to visually tell if a piston is forged, but a forged piston is noticeably lighter(less weight) than a cast piston of the same size. Pick up a cast piston and then a forged piston and you'll def know which is which. And the rods are forged steel, aluminum is NEVER a viable option on a street engine, much less a OEM warranteed engine. If in fact Audi is using an aluminum rod in something, I would love to know exactly how they are planning on doing the block swaps on a monthly basis. I don't know a helluva lot about the specifics of the DME or fueling system of the N54, but I AM a machinist by trade and can offer some incite into the why certain engine parts are used and others aren't. And with that said, I haven't disassembled an N54 or seen any pistons first hand so I have no idea if the pistons are forged. But i'll tell you this, forged rods and pistons are FAR higher on the list of must haves than a forged crank...
