Went to the track today.

Pete sent through the maps as promised and I loaded them up in anticipation.

Jumped on and within 2 laps of the track I went into limp mode

Hmmmm I thought it might be the more aggressive stage 2 so I flicked over to stage 1.... Same thing again.

So I went back and loaded my regular street maps - these have never thrown up any codes on the street no matter how hard I've driven

Bang - solenoid something or other and boost deactivation. same faults as before

Geezzzz

So I thought what the heck. I switched the procede off and tried stock. Whaddaya know - same faults again.

Conclusion - the 335i is NOT a track car. Last time I was at Winton I had my E36 M3. Stock car but it took the pounding all day. Brakes and tyres were cooked but the engine pulled and pulled.

This thing was riding on jelly by the 4th corner - I expected more from 19 inches of rubber (that's what she said!)

I'd never taken a non m car to a track before so didn't really appreciate the difference. Now I do. On my drive home I reflected on my choice of a 335 against the e92 m3.

Still happy with my choice and value for money wise I'm happy with the decision. However I have come to respect a lot more the work that goes into making a car that you can drive for 3 hrs, hammer around a track and then drive home another 3 hrs

I did data log so if anyone is curious pm me your email address and I'll send through - I have no idea how to read it but have sent to a few people who can hopefully decipher it for me

I hear you buddy! I had the same thing a couple of weeks back. Do you know what the codes were (a very wise man suggested to me to take a photo) I kept getting misfire codes. I changed the plugs and have some coil packs ready for next time.

Yep - that's what I did (take photos!)

Codes were

10887 (Outlet-VANOS variable cam control test) & 12544 (boost-pressure control, deactivation)

Plugs were done a few months ago but I dont know about coil packs.

The car runs perfectly on the street so I am assuming that the faults were due to a combination of heat and the cars feelings for being put on a track after being driven at 100km/h for 3 hours before that.....

It wasn't Pete's map that caused it because I got the same codes when I turned the procede off.

From memory the first code could be a vanos solenoid issue.

Said it many times before.
The 335is are def. not track cars. M3 is king in that regard in the BMW world.

They go fast in a straight line, that's about it. They are more of a cruiser with power to back it up. Enjoy the car for what it is. . Looks, luxury, power.

THAT SAID, there are some monster 335i/135i track cars out and about, so they do have potential. Just don't expect to extract it all from a simple tune. Maybe look at improving handling (suspension/brakes).

Although I'm not sure about the error messages. I've never had any after a session on my friends private track.
I did have one on the way back from Sydney to Melbourne however....

I've had similar issues with my N54, ONLY at the track, never on the street or drags. I think the problem is that when the boost is increased and you flog it on a high horsepower track, it encounters serious overheating issues. I think the only way around this is an upgraded oil cooler to replace the stock unit, and maybe possibly an aftermarket radiator. I think the engine is capable in stock form to handle the beating but when you start tweaking things and increasing the power, you need to upgrade the other components to. Still the best bang for buck performance motor by BMW imho.

The best of both worlds would be an M3 + supercharger. Basically all of the internals plus chassis of the M3 are good for 700hp and then some. Used M3 DCT for 100k + SC for 13k = win. I'd probably upgrade the brakes/tyres whilst I'm at it.

JB4

Hi all
Well Stu dropped a new JB4 on the counter for us to test, so at some point next week i will fit the system and do some Dyno work.
After a week or so i will convey my thoughts on all the tuning systems regarding Dyno performance and real life performance / drive-ability

Looking forward to it.
It would be nice to see map comparisons too, say between map 2 and map 7 (oh and the 'custom' map where it works out what to do based on conditions).

Got my Cobb installed today and all I can say is, I feel like driving a completely new car!
The "30% increase in power" claim made by Cobb sounds just about right!
My car is completely stock. Thinking of a drop in air filter like BMC or something.
My next mod is going to be (235/275) Michelin PSS ASAP!
I tried Stage 1 aggressive ST v301 and Stage 1 aggressive ST & LT v401 and I think I like v301 better.
Thanks to Stu (bmroxm5) for sourcing it!

This should be a good review. I've played with all 3 in the past few months and most people know which one I still use.

No dynos though, just driver feel and performance.

power delivery is what impresses me the most, still feels and drives like normal. sport non L/T is my preferred.

After "testing" a few maps, I settled for the sport ST v4.01. I didn't like how the engine sounded in the aggressive map, plus the car smelled!!

Right, I wanted a tune so when I put my foot down part throttle I was able to actually modulate power and boost. I also wanted a tune with safe AFR control, proper boost control, ignition control, and the ability to tweak settings. It really only leaves 1 tune to fit those needs right now.

With Cobb having Pro-tune you may be able to match that, but ATR is really needed before I feel Cobb can keep up.

Procede sounds like it has great control options.
