I've been told that winter tyres need to be at least 4mm tread, otherwise they are pointless. In Germany they need to be scrapped once below 3mm so you often see them appearing over here - legal but completely useless!

Don't see why they'd be useless. Less useful sure as the whole point is that the tread blocks move into the snow/slush to create movement, and you can't do this without a tread block. But they'd still be a shed load better than summers in the same circumstance.

I'd never buy a part worn winter though. Regardless.
