USB Stick Direct

Has anybody put music onto a memory stick and plugged it in directly to the USB socket in the centre armrest?

If so have you encountered any problems? Will it play the music OK?

The stick cannot be longer than 70mm so any recommendations?

Ideally I would prefer a larger memory on as smaller length stick as possible.
Steve:

I have been using many different USB Sticks in the arm rest directly plugged in. I have a 2008 335i with iDrive. I think the biggest I have used is 8 MB. I set up as a root directory with topic files followed by specific albums. The system reads it fine. The larger the stick the longer it take for the system to read. Early on if I changed a stick, say deleted one directory, it messed up the interface, so now I 'set' the stick before I introduce it to the system. They system can ID each stick and seems to want to always find the same directory structure. Quality is excellent, although I have one stick and directory where interference has been added to the tracks, it may be from the original loading of the stick, not sure.

This works well for me. I can scroll through types of music, select an album and play it. This doesn't set up for random play very well.

One problem I have not seen on the forum, my system will fail to connect with the stick every once in a while. It has even cut out in the middle of a song. Once the connection is lost, I must pull the stick and re-incert it to restart the system connection process. This will usually cure the problem.

Anyone know why the system loses connection with the stick??

Finally, I find that the iDrive system like MP4 format better than MP3. It will remember exactly where it was the last time with MP4, not MP3. An interesting aside on MP4. Not all formats are read well by the iDrive. I have Roxio Creator 2010 Pro and converted a few MP3s to MP4s, and the system cannot read them. It will skip through the song like an old 33 1/3 skipping tracks (this dates me a bit). The system has read all version of the Ipod MP4 files.

I'd appreciate anyone else's comments on how to best use USB Sticks with this system. And especially if others are losing connection with the USB Stick for no apparent reason.

wow, 55 pages on 6FL! This must be the best collection of relevant information on the planet ..

I just took delivery of my E90 LCI 325i M-Sports in Malaysia. It has iDrive & 6FL.

I connected my 4th gen iPod nano to the USB port under the arm rest using the white Apple cable. iDrive says external device "not supported" while the iPod display says "connected".

Is this normal?

I did some googling and found out about the Y-cable (iPod adapter cable). However, I came accross 2 part numbers:

61 12 0 440 796
61 12 0 440 812

Which one is right for my car? Does it charge the 4th gen nano? I also found some OEM ones on ebay that suggest 796 replacement but I'm not sure if they're gonna work.

Your feedback is very much appreciated!

Thank you!

NCH>> You will need the y-cable. I would go to your dealer and ask for the latest part number.

According to this, 812 is the latest part.

Weaselboy,

Thank you for the info. I'm convinced that Y-cable is what I need. Gonna proceed to purchase from eBay UK soon. Price is right and they will ship to Malaysia!

One quick question - I was just at service, and chatting with the service manager, and he said he had seen a memo from BMW in reference to the Y cables and ipod integration. He said that in '10 models or greater with the 6FL and iDrive, that you will soon be able to use the official Apple supplied Dock to USB connector, and that full integration, including cover art will be supported. He seemed to believe that the need for the "Y" adaptor will no longer be necessary on those models. He could not find the BMW tech sheet on this while i was there, but was very certain that it was arriving very soon. Can anyone else confirm this, and if so, does anyone further know if that feature could also be added to the CIC iDrives for 09 models or is the hardware different again on th '10 models?

I haven't heard of this but my faith in BMW's electronics is low. They still haven't fixed the issues that plague the 6FL and now they are adding more features. Yeah, that makes sense! FAIL

My service manager just sent me this PDF - and if I am reading it right, it confirms what he says about the Apple supplied Dock to USB and cover art under the apple ipod selection in blue.

"The use of the genuine Apple iPod USB cable is supported only in the 3-Series Coupé, 3-Series Con- vertible and 7-Series models manufactured 03/2010 or later. Display of CoverArts is supported when the genuine Apple iPod USB cable is used.*♦"

Again, it seems we've all heard promises from BMW, so I am not sure - but using the apple USB connector and having cover art sure would be a nice improvement...

I got the 812 (but it's interesting that 796 is printed on the part). It works with my iphone after I tell it not to go into airplane mode. It seems to also charge properly, but the phone gets very warm. Not sure if this is a 12V vs 5V usb issue or if it will be a long term problem and damage the phone...

Hello e90post,
got a question, 55 pages will take a lot of time to read.
I got 2007 335i. It has iDrive and bluetooth (tried with nexus - works fine), not sure if matter, I believe it's built 01-2007. It doesn't have USB input which I really want to get. I used USB sticks in all my cars, so want it in this car as well.
From the manual I found that there are two kits:
65 41 0 443 678 USB/audio interface retrofit kit
65 41 0 445 465 USB/audio interface retrofit kit

which one should I get? And what is SA644 and SA640 (i believe those kits differ because of this thing).
Just want to pick up the right kit...

Just received my new E92 with Navi Professional and USB Connection. I can confirm that it is possible to connect your iPhone/iPod with the Apple Dock-to-USB cable. Cover art is dispayed as well! VERY nice!

Pandora and iHeartradio....

Sorry guys if this has been covered before (I searched...)

When I start either application, Pandora or iHeartradio, the iPod mutes and starts playing the app, then after one second or so the app suddenly pauses and the iPod comes back on. I basically can't get the app to stay on over the iPod for longer than a second. What am I doing wrong???

The Cover Art variable has been present in the CIC firmware since 09/09 (MY2009) introduction; it seems that it is 03/10 (MY2010) that BMW is actually implementing it:

CDMM_USB_COVER_ART

And another upcoming feature is also dormant in the CIC and TCU:

CDMM_BLUETOOTH_AUDIO

The bluetooth audio is present in my new E92. I tried it with the iPhone 3GS. Implementation is pretty basic...

So if cover art and BT audio are present in the firmware, how would it be possible for someone with an '09 iDrive to activate this feature. Can this be done at an autologic shop or is there a "new" ISTA/P firmware we need to look for?

Also Andre - since you have confirmed using the Apple dock connector to USB cable - can you comment if you still need a wire from you ipod to the Aux in jack, or is all audio now moving through the USB?

All audio is through USB. So no other cables are needed.
