Nice squirrel catch Dave. In California we have eastern fox and eastern gray squirrels which are non-native and now dominate the urban areas. Below is our only native squirrel species, the western gray which is mostly found in wooded / scrub areas. Looking at the tail, a very healthy individual!

I grew up with the gray squirrel, in North Florida. The fox squirrels are considerably larger. Is your subject squirrel closer in size to Eastern gray or fox?

For this one, I was quietly sitting down, my eye to the camera while waiting for birds. It felt like someone was watching me, looked to my right and the squirrel was ~6ft away from me sitting down and quietly staring. A bit unnerving since I'm the one usually doing the stalking! |

Here's LNER K1 loco 62005 hauling The Jacobite from Fort William to Mallaig on the West Highland Line.
This image shows it storming up the 1 in 48 gradient on Beasdale Bank. The gradient, and associated reverse curves, is quite a challenge for any steam loco, but 62005 and her crew managed it well.

First day out with the Rx10. It's going to take some time to get used to the auto-focus. I can't seem to focus on things like clouds or the moon in a blue sky. And trying to grab a clean shot of a turkey vulture was hard. Lots of focus hunting. I guess it's just a matter of getting the settings right and practicing. Mr. Squirrel was a much easier target.

Try Center Tracking for starters. The Sony menu provides lots of adaptability, but also, plenty of ways to screw up.

Thanks, DC. I looked at my settings and adjusted accordingly. I'm sure it's just a matter of familiarization and practice. I don't expect the RX10 to duplicate a 5DIV and EF 500mm F4, but I'm hoping it can be a reasonably competent single-camera option for travel.

Cruising into the week. I'm still surprised that my 5 year canon t3i with a stock lens is still doing pretty well. Hopefully will upgrade soon. Debating going mirror less
Edit: yes I noticed the blemish right under the car, must've been something on the lens |

Not bad for a handheld point-and-shoot. RX10 MkIV @ 600mm
