Could we have found the potential problem for all the HPFP failures that we've seen? A faulty or malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator?

For now I am just happy the engine is in one piece after the scary explosions and metal crashing that occurred. Could have been worse, and luckily wasn't have to remember that.
That's good news OP, glad to see it was something fairly basic.

I don't think it's unreasonable to demand an explanation as to how the regulator got clogged....

Sweet. After thinking about your original post it makes more sense.

When there is a severe drop in fuel pressure known as lean cut it feels like you just drove into a wall, so this does make sense.

Glad it resolved.

Thread title change!

Just got back from dealer 25 miles in nasty rush hour DC traffic. Car runs fantastic. Just like it did before all this happened.

$695 parts, $695 for labour. I can live with that.
No charge for pressure test, no charge for fuel test. Still it shouldn't have happened, but damn could have been so much worse. Thanks so much BMW scaring me half to death.

Part number | Description | Unit Cost
----------------------+--------------------------------+----------------
16-14-7-163-298 | Repair Kit, Fuel PU | 398.87
16-14-7-163-296 | Repair Kit, Fuel FI | 295.43
----------------------+--------------------------------+----------------

Shiv and Tiago, you both get brownie points for calling out the issue without the benefit of having the car in your respective shops.

Now guys let me tell you about detonation. Man oh man, I hope to never experience anything like that again. You know I have heard some pretty nasty backfires and laughed, but at least they are all sound; This detonation thing -- no wonder they call it detonation. The violence experienced by the engine, I am still besides myself something didn't break.

Ok I'll get you guys the part numbers later. Car is parked in the garage now, and paperwork in trunk; You can imagine I don't feel like going over there to get it right now. I am just relieved its all over and without a disastrous conclusion. Thanks everyone for your kind helpful comments and well wishes. < updated part numbers - no idea what is what >

Glad you got everything fixed and the motor wasn't blown! I would seriously look into getting some type of warranty be it aftermarket or through bmw with all the problems you've had.

Congrats..not bad on the prices you were charged..labor is very reasonable for dealership..I think they knew what it was but prolly let you sweat it out a bit..classic dealer tactic..

So new LPFP and regulator here

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=16&fg=15&hl=6

The fuel preparation system on this car is so iffy..HPFP, injectors and now seems the regulator and LPFP..all of which are supposed to go for 100K miles..

32K miles and in addition to that and new Turbos (not counting since I have a tune) and 4 HPFP is just puzzling. Was there an QA or real testing done on this car before they released it?

Just to get idea of the markup the dealer charges for parts

www.bmwpartscenter.net

16-14-7-163-298 - $266
16-14-7-163-296 - $177

But compared to what you were facing Im sure you're glad just to put this all behind you

OK, so let me make sure I have this right based on Shiv and Tiago's comments..
Vase, what you felt was not actually knock/detonation, but rather fuel cut that mimics the same feeling. Knock/detonation can only occur at high load, not idle. Correct?

Correct. There was no detonation. What he felt was miss caused by a fuel cut. Detonation doesn't cause the engine to jerk back and forth because the engine still producing torque throughout the detonation event. Detonation is a term that shouldn't be thrown around so freely. I don't know why the dealership would even mention it in the first place.

Ok Shiv, sorry didn't realize you were referring to PROCede. I have edit it. I didn't want to imply anything by that, and as I stated, it was on map 0. Reason is people know I have it, I didn't want to start getting called out when I knew it was not a factor.

As far as detonation, what dealer said is there were a few codes indicating a few events of sudden lean conditions that the dealer believes led to detonation and said that is what I felt. This was not a stutter, it was a violent noisy and physically jolting event all 3 times it happened. They told me that before they ever pulled anything on the car because the codes were the first thing they checked for.
