Evaluate RB Turbos

Anyone in SD have RB's and wanna demo them to me? My stockers are on their way out, I'm looking for options.

Ideally, you'd also be FBO.

I'm in Carmel Valley and will come to you (I wanna hear them cold).

Thanks,
Rob

I believe 335iNavyGuy has Vargas but I don't think there's RB's around here. Good luck and keep us posted if you upgrade

It seems he's still in the market for new turbos and he may no longer be interested in RB's.

Or deal with spending the "extra money;" like three times or more if you have a shop do the install, and whether you can retain your existing aftermarket exhaust or need to purchase a new one. We're talking passing $12k and way, way beyond, plus several months of having your car in their shop. And at those claimed horsepower/torque figures, everything else in the drive train will have to be beefed up to put that power down reliably and not break. Might as well write a blank check and expect at least double the value of your car spent on all these "upgrades" alone.

All to gain what, simple bragging rights for having 650-700 RWHP under the hood?

I'm sure those dyno numbers and graphs and AFRs look mighty impressive, if I could have seen them. But where's the follow-up track results as promised? And all for what:
"Driving a single turbo car is very different than driving a twin turbo car. You really must re-learn how to drive the car because the powerband is shifted to the right. Like any car, you must know where it makes power and drive the car as such. I drive my car now at about 3k rpms to keep the car ready to go." --Former_Boosted_IS
To have to maintain at least 3K RPM's to be "ready to go" because there's absolutely nothing in the power band below that? The fact that Former_Boosted_IS has stopped any further updates on his single-turbo upgrade and completely disappeared from the forum shortly thereafter speak volumes.

I really like my 335, but heck no of dumping that much money into turning it into a limited weekend track/light-night street whore. There are better platforms for that purpose to choose from. And there will always be someone faster, guaranteed.

Um, no thanks.

Where are you getting 12k from? And if someone has the money to buy a bmw and mod it, it shouldn't be a problem.

We are spoiled with our quick spool. 3k for spool on a big single is still pretty damn good to me. Just because someone stopped posting on a forum doesn't mean anything. Why would the car be a weekend warrior? Daily it with a single turbo or big twins!

There will always be cars out there faster and better. In the end Whoever has the most money wins the race.

Look up various vendors for single turbo offerings, such as FFTEC. $6.8k for their smallest turbo, manifold, and other associated hardware; $7.3k for for their largest. Then they post as REQUIRED additional supporting hardware totaling another $3k. And this doesn't include installation costs.

But hey, I wasn't knocking anyone who wanted to spend that money and would be happy to provide support to anyone embarking on such a project; but I take umbrage to those telling others who were simply inquiring about RBs, to spend way more green for dubious results without understanding the needs and wants of the inquirer; that's just plain silly.

And I was only questioning large turbos: the RB/VTTS2 twins are well within reasonable price ranges and street ability.

Snipped this last segment because I thought your "3k" comment was about price. But how many people truly want to spin to 3,000 RPM before power kicks? I'm glad you would be happy, along with a very small minority, but for my typical daily driving, everything practically happens below 3k the majority of the time, with an occasional jaunt to 4k.

But why tell others how "good" all this is and it's okay to spend the extra money: why don't YOU splurge and tell us all about the experience, huh chief? Make us jealous with envy. And I'll be happy to help with the wrenching.

Fftec sells a front mount without turbo for 4900. You can source a turbo yourself after that and buy wastegates.

I won't argue cause I just suggested upgrading to fat turbo instead of hybrids. He doesn't have to listen to me. I am all for rbs but you need to really load the car up with octane to get full power out of rbs.

You can also go with a smaller sized turbo if you're looking to make more power lower on the powerband. It all boils down to which size turbo and what supporting hardware you get.

Also, the most expensive part of going single would come down to the tuning stage. You'd be better off going with a standalone management unit and then having a real pro tune it. Otherwise, if you search properly, you can find used single turbos and get them re-fabbed and get all your custom piping done for a bit less than $12k.

That being said, I'm still waiting see how much power can really be extracted from the N54, whether it be on twins or a hefty single.

Why would tuning be the most?

With what you say I do agree however, in the end it has been and will always be "To Each Their Own" If they want to go the route of RBs or stock or maybe even a smaller turbo, its up to them. We might see it being worthless or a bad way to spend/invest one's money but then again, its not our money anyways!

Either way, I always like seeing what people do, do to their cars because it helps me decide, especially seeing as my original plans fell through!

I recently got my turbos replaced under warranty for my 335i. The first few service advisors i talked to wanted me to have my actuators adjusted first before being able to get my turbos warrantied. let me know if you have the wastegate rattle and under 82k miles i can send you in the right direction.
