I can't help that you did not manage your expectations properly. iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S - seems to make sense to me. They also made a huge leap just a few months ago in making the phone CDMA compatible. If you honestly believe that the plastic droid devices are the best hardware then by all means, get it. They feel like cheap toys compared to the substantial and extremely refined iPhone. It looks like something from Bang & Olufsen while the others scream Sanyo. My only gripe when I moved from my Incredible to the iPhone was the slightly slower processor speed and worse camera. Both of those have been completely resolved.

Obviously if you had read my posts in previous iPhone threads concerning this release, I have been pushing for a while now that this was indeed going to be a minor upgrade. I wasn't surprised by it one bit.

Also, HTC makes hardware that rivals the iPhone in quality. I think you're thinking of Samsung and Moto (among others) with the plastic crap.

I had the HTC Incredible prior to my 4. Form was good - not great.

I also confess that I have not read this whole thread.

It's not just this thread but other "upcoming iPhone" type threads. We've basically known for a while that it's basically an OS and feature upgrade, with a dual core processor and some minorly improved hardware, to include an antenna fix. Unfortunately, some fucktarded bloggers out there kept piping in LTE rumors and all kinds of other shit. Tech bloggers are fucking idiots sometimes.

The 4S is a good phone. It's a great phone. It improves on a lot that the 4 fell behind on. However, so many people are disappointed. There has to be a reason for this. The only thing I can think of is that they got their hopes too high. Also, Apple is advancing their hardware cautiously and although bleeding edge Android devices can't even take full advantage of their blazing specs, they're moving much faster. Eventually, the hardware gap is going to widen unless something happens (my guess is battery tech will bottleneck practicality very soon. It has already really). I hate spec sheet comparisons as much as any other guy, but it's how A LOT of people shop.

You just made me think a little more about my Droid days. My biggest droid gripe? The weather app in every add for the phone - - it never worked. Ever. I did a searched on droid forums and it seems almost everyone was having the same issue. Now that is pretty embarrassing.

Potential Android marketing ploy? Imagine Android hires a few credible inside tech bloggers to hype the "iPhone 5" to the general public. The general public then takes a tech blogger review as serious as cancer, then spreads rumors like a wildfire, then after Tim Cooks releases the IP4S, majority of dedicated apple followers are let down and take their business elsewhere (Android).

The vibe I got from the big apple guys I work with who *were* disappointed was "I'm so disappointed! When can I pre-order?"

I have the 3GS so for me the 4S would be a hell of an upgrade as you can see. The thing is though that I have played with a 4 and have a lot of experience with it and it seems that the 4S will improve upon it. Yesterday, I went to the AT&T store and played with the Samsung Galaxy SII and really liked it as well. Now I really can't decide between which phone I want...

Edit- I really like the Iphone interface and have grown used to it over the years... does anyone with Droid have any experience to compare?

interested article on BGR today: http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/05/apples-fall-from-grace/

Quote:
Apple was a company that could do no wrong. Phones that dropped every other call… Location tracking scandals… Antennagate… A CEO who constantly parked his $130,000 sports car diagonally in handicapped spaces… Apple didn’t have to roll with the punches, the company would simply laugh at the punches or toss the press and public a few crumbs if need be. A week or even a day later, all was forgiven and Apple would continue on its path, making terrific products and mopping up industry profits while whistling to itself contently.

On Tuesday when Apple unveiled its brand new iPhone 4S, the fifth iteration of Apple’s revolutionary smartphone, things felt different. The company’s iconic co-founder was nowhere to be found, the venue was smaller, the applause seemed reticent and the product unveiled was not greeted with arms open quite as widely as they had been in the past. People seemed, in a way, bored.

Reactions from those who spent time with the device at Apple’s press conference were positive, of course, but it didn’t feel the same. What was different this time around? Members of the press and many consumers following the event felt that we were looking at a possible miss from the great Apple. Beyond nitpicking and whining about insignificant specs or other irrelevancies, many level-headed writers and pundits genuinely seemed to think that the iPhone 4S might be the beginning of the end.

Yes, investors were seemingly disappointed by Tuesday’s announcements, but this is hardly uncommon. Buy the rumor, sell the news. That Apple only closed down half a percent on Tuesday exhibits confidence in the company’s management, strategy and portfolio more than it does disappointment in the iPhone 4S.

And what about analysts? The finance crowd adores Apple, so they must have been jumping up and down in their penthouses, right?

“Apple no longer has a leading edge, its cloud service is even behind Android; it can only sell on brand loyalty now,” Gartner analyst C.K. Lu told Reuters on Wednesday. “Users may wait to buy the next iPhone; if they can’t wait, they may shift to brands with more advanced specs.”

“We had expected the company to announce two new devices, an iPhone 5 and a 4-plus,” JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz wrote in a note to investors. “We are disappointed that Apple did not introduce a thinner form factor, but we see the feature set improvements in the iPhone 4S and the broader pricing strategy as positives.”

If the phone had this exact amount of improvement but was given a new case and called the 5, would people have still been disappointed?

Here's how the article titled "Apple's Fall From Grace" ended:
Quote:
Naysayers said Apple couldn’t cut it selling just one or two smartphone models, and now Apple owns two-thirds of global smartphone industry profits. Led by Apple’s gray-haired iPhone 4, which launched in June 2010, Apple sold more smartphones last quarter than any other vendor on the planet.

The numbers will do the talking over the next few quarters, and I expect Apple’s iPhone sales to continue on the same skyward path right up to next year’s iPhone 5 launch and beyond. As of October 12th, Apple will sell three different smartphone models that range in price from free to $399. The company will address postpaid smartphone buyers from top to bottom, and rumors suggest we may even see an attack on the prepaid market in the near future. No company stays on top forever, of course, but Apple’s new smartphone lineup is hardly that of a company that has begun its descent.

Apple may have fallen from grace in a way, but until competitors can even come close to approaching the allure surrounding Apple devices and the user experiences they afford, don’t expect the company’s grip on the industry to loosen at all.

yes. after hearing all the swirling rumors, something like this is what was expected:

bigger screen, dual core proc, 1gb ram, 64gb storage, 8mpix cam, bigger home button, etc., etc.

instead we got:

Name: Screen shot 2011-10-04 at 4.18.38 PM.png
Views: 422
Size: 478.6 KB

which features same design, same screen, and some features that android has had forever.

I just saw that first pic for the first time yesterday. That thing is so clearly a plastic mockup and knowing full well what Apple's packaging looks like, you'd have to be naive to assume that was legit.

it was a mockup based off all the 'leaks' of casemate designed accessories that were specifically labeled as iphone 5 accessories.

the reason why everyone, specially ITT, is so disappointed is due to the fact you believed all the lies and rumors for the last 12+ months. Anyone who closely follows Apple news, knew exactly what was coming and its exactly what we got. The only thing no one knew, was what it would be called.

That's exactly my point. I was sure it was going to be called a 4S since it only made sense after the 3G -> 3GS progression of the previous chassis.

Considering how Android is continue to excel. I expected more from Apple. iPhone were the best selling smartphone in the US not too long ago. Now they are getting killed by Android.

Really.... really..... they're getting "killed?" It outsells every other phone on the market.
