it's 0xc00009C (or 21A) which supposedly means bad blocks on HDD.
My friend tried using the converter to get access to it but he couldnt get into documents. He then tried deleting some windows files and reinstalling them but that didnt work. Then today he tried some recovery programs and it kept giving him errors. It might be the hdd- I just want to get the data from there.

get sometihng liek knoppix boot from disc and just run some unix commands to transfer it to another hd or a new partition

i don't remember a code, but there's one that'll read even from bad sectors, it'll keep trying and after a while if it can't it'll skip it but it'll recover almost all of your files. this is what i did when my western digital died w/ 200 gb of data. it was enough to salvage most of my cd images and movies. things played perfectly. so for word document si'm sure it'd be fine.

knoppix is a linux distribution, he using linux? if so, here are the problems

1. it s not easy to read/write NTFS partitions in linux
2. how r u gonna transfer if the sector is bad

NTFS is windows xp's file system

it'll retry the sectors, for me anyways the sectors were accessible eventually, maybe not on the first go around but the the whole harddrive was just intermittently buggy so that if you plugged the hd in you couldn't copy files w/o it freezing and timing out through a gui. It doesn't actually read the ntfs partition, it recopies the whole partition and all files into an identical partition.

Good to know that you're IT director. My search engine (Google, MSN) has been hijacked by others. Everytime I click on one of those links, it will always lead to me to different link unless I copy shortcut the link and reopen in a different page. How do I remove these hijackers? I've tried different spywares but still doesn't work. Thanks.

I will let my friend know about this and see if he can use it (find the code or something). Thanks dude!

lol, sounds more like yahoo and google been block by your company, so whatever link you click on the search result, it will redirection you to another preset page. you can only copy and paste the link now? can you go to second page when you got the search result from yahoo or google?

solution: put $20 in the red envelope and give to your IT, tell him to unblock you
