Played decent last week during my companies golf league. Driver was on point too!

Tonight, another beautiful night for golf! Plan to get to the course early to hit some chips and putts. Need to dial the short game in.

Friday, I am taking my wife and 6.5 year old daughter to the local par 3 to get my daughter out on the course for the first time! I am pretty pumped for it!

Hot as shit last night! Shorts and my polo were just drenched.

Anyways, I pretty much played the best golf I have ever played. Shot a 42. Funny enough, I am very surprised by that because I have been having shoulder issues for the past several days. I have had 3 major right shoulder surgeries when I was younger (18, 20 and 21 years old).

So I have developed a lot of scar tissue and somehow this past Fall / Winter, my shoulder was so flared up that I couldn't raise my arm. Had an MRI then got two injections into my shoulder joint. Instant relief! Now, it has slowly started back up about a month ago with the worst being a few days ago.

Somehow I was able to take a few Tylenol and push through it and everything was spot on. Unreal!

There is an old saying. Beware the injured golfer. And for good reason. When injured people often stay within themself and their swing syncs up.

I just finished playing a high end private course in the Scottsdale area. Damn hot today and not a dry heat. One of the rare days I pounded water and wore a damp towel between shots. Course was also not in the greatest shape. Greens OK but the transition to bermuda isn't taking yet (same as my home course).

I shot 83. But on my handicap that is a bad round. And it was all putting. I sucked. But, playing again Saturday on my home course and hope to get my act together.

Thats tough man. The heat just drains you and I can't imagine playing 18 in that weather. Playing the 9 holes was enough for me to be honest. I used to live in Scottsdale for 2 years and that heat is no joke!

It's a shame that you pay all of that money and the course doesn't look good. Same thing can be said for up here in Cincinnati. If I am paying a premium, I expect the grounds to be a premium.

I am sure you will get your shit together and have a solid round on Saturday!

I know I am already itching to get back out there to play but it probably wont be until next Wednesday for my golf league.

The course we played yesterday is called Firerock. I was very surprised to see how bad the course was. As you know most courses here play on some kind of rye or other grass in the winter which they have to seed in the fall, and then let that die and allow the Bermuda to take over for summer. Both Firerock and my home course are lacking in Bermuda cover. At least their greens were OK. Ours were deep punched and sanded this week. And they were already lacking much cover. This actually should be to my advantage as I am a lousy putter and shitty greens brings my competition down to my level.

I do live on a private golf community with 2 18 hole courses and usually at least one of them is OK. Well this year we are doing a ton of work on one of them and it's closed until fall and the one that is open is in need of help. We had a "misadventure" last year where a worker was supposed to fertilize all the greens and "oops" used herbicide. That's why the other course is closed getting remodeled.

But on the plus side my cost of golf is VERY reasonable for the area. $1000 a month covers all my golf, and most of my after golf drinks etc. And there is a fantastic community here for a golfer.

$1k isn't bad at all! Well, how many times per month are you golfing? What is the avg price to play 18 with a cart? It's about $50 - $100 here in Cincinnati.

Yeah $1K is reasonable. It is my monthly dues at a private club. We have two 18 hole courses. Which is down to one as we are remodeling one of the courses. And the one open is in sad shape as the bermuda is SLOW growing in this year. But, still I play 4 times a week so the price is right.

I own my own cart so not an issue. For members who don't live on the course the carts are free as part of membership.

That is awesome! Would love to play 4 times per week!

Once my daughter is in college and the wife and I are retired, we want to play about 4 times per week and live on a golf course. I don't think it will be in Cincinnati. I would safely assume it will be in a southern state.

You know, that brings up a thought - for course design, I've seen various iterations of 3x9 hole courses, or 2x18, but never 4x9, 5x9, etc.

While I know it's more traditional to have a designated / dedicated 18, for some private clubs it seems to me you'd get more variety and usage out of having a 4x9 setup rather than a 2x18.

Consider:

2x18 gives you 2 courses you can play. Maybe 4 if you start on the back 9 and finish on the front.

3x9 gives you 6 different 18 hole layouts

4x9 gives you 12

5x9 gives you 20 different 18-hole layouts

I feel like while there's a tradeoff with the extra space needed, obviously, you'd also be able to keep a higher throughput + better maintenance by having fewer holes unavailable / in bad shape at any given time. And the real estate for 4x9 is identical to 2x18, overall, unless you have a course that doesn't loop back around to the clubhouse after 9.

Good thoughts and if I were designing a place now it would factor. I live in a golf community with 2x18 courses designed 50 years ago. It would not work for us to try and change as you note the 9th holes are not near the clubhouse.

Yeah, I mean I think when most golf courses were designed, the throughput and such wasn't really much of a thought vs the challenge and beauty.

Modern times, modern designs.

Also just to play with the math above -

Supposing you don't count playing front 9 / back 9 in different orders as really playing a different course in a 2x18 setup. Having a 3x9 still gives you 3 different 18 hole layouts regardless of order, having 4x9 gives you 6, and having 5x9 gives you 10 different 18-hole courses. Half the numbers if the order matters, but still twice the variety of just the 18 by themselves.

Golf league got rained out last night. Was only able to play 1 hole until the down pour came. Bought new golf umbrellas from amazon last night as soon as I got home so I won't get stuck in that mess again.

Some of the other teams stuck it out and played. My golf partner and I decided to pack it up and call it a day. We were soaked and so were our bags and clubs. I have two box fans on my clubs since I got home last night. Should be dry by the time I get back home from the office.

Sucks. I really look forward to playing every Wednesday. We haven't received an ounce of rain for about 7 days. Then it down pours last night. Dry all day too. Now the forecast is saying, dry / hot weather until next Thursday with 50% chance then..so fingers crossed for dry weather next Wednesday.

Weather Sunday isn’t looking great around here, so I’m taking off work tomorrow to play Rock Spring in West Orange NJ. Shot 80 there last Sunday so that means I’ll probably shoot in the mid 90s tomorrow. 😆

I played okay but Rock Spring was setup absolutely as difficult as possible. Every tee box was back, and every pin was in its most-difficult position. Felt like low 80s but golf got in the way. 😉

That is a pretty cool app! What is the name of it? I have been using SwingU and I like it alot.

I would take low 80s for 18. I am low 90s right now.

I have my work golf league tomorrow night! Hope the rain holds off...again and my shoulder isn't hurting so bad. But damn, I miss playing!

I track and score my game with Arccos. It’s perfect for a data geek like myself. I especially like how you can see how you performed relative to a target handicap. Lately I set my target handicap to 10.0 so I can see if I’m playing above/below a single-digit handicap level. I happen to be at a 10.0 handicap right now, but you can see my handicap has been slipping because in my last 20 round I have been giving up 1.8 strokes per round relative to a 10.0 handicap.

I don't use those apps. I'm pretty sure it would read:

That is all.

Shot my best round (81) yesterday at my local course. Lost a ball on one hole which shouldn't have been hard to find but I had to take the penalty.

Road to break 80 this season is getting much closer.
