Personally, i mostly shoot automotive and maybe some landscape so zoom is not my biggest concern. If your like me, you probably want a super wide angle. Like john said, if you have the money, a Canon 10-22, if not then a sigma 10-20 will do just fine as well. Both have great reviews and because of the wideness of the lens, you can get very creative with some photos. If you want a walk around lens, you can look at something like a 17-40 or anything in that range is a great walk around. I dont know much about zoom lenses since i dont really care much for it so your on your own on that one!

Oh i forgot to mention. If you dont have a 50mm prime or if your up for it a 30mm prime, you should definitely get one. These are very sharp and because of the low f stop, you can get great bokeh and lots of DOF.
If money isint a factor, i'd probably go with a 30mm prime because of the crop body on the xti.
