Your argument is that you want to watch the best athletes. Then by that logic there are, even if you believe that the bears are one of the 4 best teams in the nfl (bullshit), at least two teams with better athletes- Green Bay and Pitt. Rooting interests are an emotional attachment. I'm not gonna beat my wife and kids if the Bears loose like some Packers fans, but it is possible to watch the best athletes and enjoy their skill, even if they play for a team I hate, or I hate them. My main rooting interests are Chicago teams, but I also like the Dolphins, Mets, Spurs, Dodgers, the Steelers have been growing on me as my affiliation with Pittsburgh has been getting stronger through family and friends. Just because I am a fan of a team, in no way implies that I believe them to have the best athletes. It does imply that I want them to have the best athletes, and the best team, but I am not going to delude myself into thinking players are better than they are. Additionally, my "favorite" players are rarely the "best" players either. They're often very good players, that for some reason I like better than players I know to be much better. Often this has to do with them being on a team I like, and others their team has nothing to do with it, and for some reason I just like them (no homo)

Secondly, again by virtue of the better athlete argument, you would then be a sox fan over a cubs fan. But you are not. Therefore you don't really prefer the better athlete.

I prefer, roster for roster, the Sox roster. But I'd rather see the Cubs win the WS. Again, the team with the best athletes is in no way required to be someones favorite team simply because of this fact. I enjoyed watching the Sox much more than the Cubs last year, but I wanted the Cubs to win much more than I did the Sox, if that makes sense.

I think my point is, and my problem with Bernsie argument here is that I understand that the level of play and therefore the game is better on the pro level due to the better athletes. However, that does not completely invalidate lower level sports. Sport, after all, plants its seeds of passion in us at an early age based on our love of competion, and our desire to be witness to the spectacle at any level. Otherwise, for example, why did you play tennis and soccer? You obviously were not pro material (although playing both those sports does make you ghey)...so why bother? Because you received enjoyment from it...and that is what makes collegiate sport worthwhile to many. Butler is not joining the ranks of the best collegiate teams anytime soon, but they deserve a modicum of respect for their accomplishment and it is pissing me off to hear meatballs just sh!t on them even though I have no vested interest in them.

I'm not saying people shouldn't play sports because they can't be an elite athlete at the top level of their respective sport. I really don't follow much NCAA Basketball until once a year the tournament is for lack of a better word "forced" upon me (yea, I could turn it off, and most years I do)...but for a trademark, halo tournament, representative the status of the entire league, the NCAA tournament, exemplified through the championship game, the sport of college basketball is overall poorly played by people without professional ability, yet revered by so many, who for reasons I can not understand derive importance from winning, while actively ignoring, condoning, and often contributing to one of the sleaziest and most corrupt institutions in sports, after NCAA Football, all too often asserting its virtues, purity, and necessity, when its strongest virtue is mediocre play, it's purity is long gone, and its necessity questionable (where do the best HS players go...the NBA or NCAA?)

If people like it, fine. I don't get it. That's why.
